  • What's your "Go to" Meal?

I figure if it's your go to meal, you know it's tasy, at least reasonably priced, and simple. I'll take your tried and true!

Mine are: omelets, sandwiches. Boring, I know, that's why I'm ready to steal a few more.

If I have a whole 20 mintes I often whip up a canned bean thing or casserole...
Otherwise I'll ditto the eggs and sandwhiches.

my easiest tastiest one is sausages peppers and oninoins. i get a bag of green pepper stir fry at savealot. (if you cant get it..just slice up some peppers and oinions) heat in a pan with some oil, heat to softness..i usually let the premade go about 5minutes...then add one package of sliced thin polish sausage or any compareable type of sausage. heat thru...yuummmyy..

        hope thats what you ment.

        have a good day

Ground round cooked and drained. Add a can of kidnay beans and some frozen corn. Serve over rice. I have boil bags of rice in case of emergency as well as the other ingredients. I might also add other things if they are left over!

Re: What's your "Go to" Meal?

We always keep kielbasa/Polish sausage in the freezer for quick meals - it can be pretty cheap if you get it on sale/with coupons. I slice that up and fry it with onions- let it stick a little bit and get brown. Then add some diced potatoes and water - scrape the bottom of the pan a little to loosen all those yummy browned bits. Let is cook until the potatoes are tender, adding more water when necessary. Easy and actually really good.

When you have time, buy a big package of ground beef and brown it. Then cook each celery, onion, and green pepper (1 c. each per 1 lb. beef) in the drippings. Freeze 1 lb. meat, 1 c. each of the veggies together in a baggie. When you want chili, throw it in the crockpot with some tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, canned beans, chili powder...whatever else you want (i.e. corn). Let it cook on low all day and come home to a good meal.

For those nights when I have nothing planned...breakfast for dinner. Usually pancakes from scratch (only one step harder then making them from mix) and sausage.

Oh, here's another one - egg noodles, canned chicken, water/milk, Parmesan cheese, and veggies (peas or broccoli, usually). Can be made in the time it takes to cook the noodles. Just cook them with water/milk (don't drain - leave a little liquid for the cheese to melt into), take it off the heat and add the rest.
Oh yeah, one more. A dish my father used to make in his bachelor days, so you know it's gotta be easy Slice up a few potatoes as thin as possible, throw in a frying pan with Crisco or butter, and add a few sliced hot dogs. Again, make sure you let the potatoes get nice and brown on the bottom. Cook them on med/low for a while. I'm not going to pretend that these are the healthiest dishes, but they are all quick, easy, and tasty

Err canned bean thing...hmm if I have black and white I can make hockey chili, in about 5 minutes plus simmer time (recipie on my blog)

if I have green beans (frozen) or tomatoes and elbow mac I might make err chili, or taco mac. (tomatoe for taco, green beans for 'chili')

err no recipie? just dump ingredients and spices (cook elbow mac let drain while mixing and simmering other stuff)

I go with a pack of taco sauce per can of tomatoes or beans or meat (if we have any meat)

I love pasta, especially mixing 2 kinds together, like angel hair with shells.

It's my comfort food, but i always wiegh a pound more the next day!

make some ramen noodle & stick whatever you've got or want into the pot with it & the seasoning packets. Usually I add canned veggies & cheese to it & or sausage if I have any.

omlets are a good one too, a good way to use up left over sausage or ham

I'd love to try the green pepper one, if my dh or dd would eat it! *LOL*

Spaghetti is a big one here, especially in summer. It doesn't heat up the house very much (wich is a big plus) and I can add produce from the garden (like fresh tomatos & zuchinni). Alot of times I skip browning any hamburger because it's already thick enough from me adding the veggies. I also cook the veggies with the noodles so I don't have another pan to clean & it saves gas.

Re: What's your "Go to" Meal?

i just posted in my blog, about meals on the go.... we have a new chinese carryout about a mile away from our home... i was brainstorming about meals to go, they are offering a tray for $5 a lb... this could feed 2 ppl.. we could take our coffee and tea thermos's and eat in the car or take it home.. has anyone tried this, instead of mcd's or wendy's... i know if you spend over $15 at another restaurant they deliver free... with the price of gas, that is another option.. i think you have to tip $2 for that restaurant... anyway, a thought.

For reasons ogf health and finance, I'm trying to avoid any kind of take out at all. Five bucks may sound cheap to some, but as a meal for two, to me that's pretty high. Thanks for the thought, though.

Just made a good one tonight after looking in the fridge and finding nothing...I went on recipezaar.com and searched for recipes using penne pasta, since I was in a pasta mood. I found this one "Penne Allarabiata" (recipe #19363). It's pasta with a sauce made of crushed tomatoes, bacon, onion, peppers, and spices. It was excellent, very easy, and I had everything on hand. I always keep canned tomatoes on hand, and usually have some type of quick meat (bacon, kielbasa, hot dogs) in the freezer which really helps on nights like these.
