Try TigerDirect or the Dell Factory Outlet (select the price in the drop-down menu).

I would also check your local Craigslist. I've found several good computer deals locally from people who just want to make the sale and be done with it. (Most of the time, they have already bought a new computer themselves.)

If you know any computer hardware geeks (which are different from your average geek) mine was 100 off ebay, my MILS was less...bought with a 'bad battery error' and then bought a battery...cheap fix, but non geeks wont do it.

Walmart.com is really good for me. They have stuff that is never in their stores.

Try eCost. They have some good deals, especially on refurbished models. I see a number of laptops for under $500, lowest for $195.99.

Systems Notebooks - eCOST.com - electronics, computers, laptops, mp3 players

I reiterate my recommendation of watching slickdeals.

            Recent example:
HP G60t Laptop: Core 2 Duo 2 GHz, 3GB DDR2, 250GB HDD, DVDRW, WiFi, 16" 1366x768 LCD, Webcam, Vista Basic $467 w/ free shipping + Free Deskjet D4360 Printer After $70 Rebate link

Note that you have to move quickly when you see a deal... they go fast.

I second craigslit (but be careful--always try it out first) and slickdeals. It's hard to find cheap Macs--you definitely won't get one from under $500. For PCs, try Dell--their computers aren't fantastic but they're generally decent and you can customize them.

I got my Acer one netbook for about $375 at Staples. Walmart has last years model with a 20G smaller HD for $299 right now. I love the thing. It can do everything my 17" wide screen Acer can do but faster as it comes with XP.

I googled 2013: $400 laptop - there are an amazing # of computers in that range - there is even one of the razor-thin, 3 ounce (okay, I exaggerate but that thing is light and thin) models. Toshiba and all the major brands offer good deals in that range.

love my chromebook, not a laptop, more of a tablet because it runs on google chrome but it wont catch a virus and a quick SSD for $200, im sold on them. only thing i dont like about it is it wont run skype but for $200 bucks ill throw it away when im done with it, i can upgrade sooner.

There was a deal for the Toshiba - Satellite 14" Laptop - Intel Core i5 - 6GB Memory - 750GB Hard Drive - Satin Gold on Bestbuy for $499 just yesterday. Not sure if its still there. Absolutely stellar deal for a laptop with those specs. Also the smaller sized 14" screen would really suit the portability required in college life.
