  • Bagged Produce Tip

This is one I've been doing for years, but thought I'd pass it along.

The bagged potatoes, onions, apples, oranges, (well you get the idea) - weigh them before you buy.

From my personal experience, the weight of the pre-bagged fruits & weggies can vary as much as a pound more to a 1/2 pound less than what is stated on the label!

That is a great tip! I would never have thought to double check them.

Also check your bags to make sure there are no rotten ones in them!

I work in a farm stand. Bagging prepackaged produce isn't easy, you almost never hit it dead on, but work for over by a certain percentage.

Also, if an item is "each," like lettuce is .99 each, buy the heaviest there too!

Sharing your experience makes changes a lot rather than people saying just a theory. Everything must be proven effective first.

My mother did the same thing every time we go shopping. Now I know.

One of the tricks DW taught me about choosing produce is to pick it up and test if it feels heavier or lighter than it should. Oddly enough, your muscle 'sense' tells you whether it 'feels' heavy or light. You want heavy as it means the produce still has water weight - in fruit, this translates as more juice or sweeter.

Thanks for your tips. I never double check all the bagged products I buy. But because of your posts surely I will do it.
