I've got some watermelon seeds that I've started...or at least trying to start. I heard from a friend that watermelon tends to try and take over your yard. Is this true? I don't want to transplant too many if that's true.

Re: Anyone grow Watermelons?
I have grown watermellons. Like most squash you have to keep them away from all other plants in the squash family and yes - they take over the yard. The "bush" type will be 10 to 15 feet across. The "vine" type will grow to 20, even 30 feet long. But, they are fun! If you have small children, they love them!

Re: Anyone grow Watermelons?
btw... just heard on tonites newscast... eat your watermelon at room temp of 70 degrees.. do not refrigerate, it destroys the nutrients and vitamins.... just tasted some samples today at a very high priced farm market/garden center.. it was room temp and tasted sweeter to me... by coincidence.

Re: Anyone grow Watermelons?
I grow them every year. Often the seeds from store watermelon wont grow. Keep them away from other vines, as they will try to cross pollante, and you end up with weird stuff. They like lots of sun, and lots of water. If it gets really hot, they may dry rot on you (heat from the dark ground reflects up and rots the bottom of the fruit-tomotoes get it too). so you may need to mulch under the plant and melon with some hay or straw. They can go everywhere, but that means more to eat! They don't survive the winter, so you don't have to worry that they will take over after a couple of years.
