  • Recepies that use bread

    I have too much bread now. I also have some ground beef, peanut butter, jelly, some veggies and not very much other food.

    I was wondering if anyone knows any good recepies that use lots of bread and not too much other ingredients, as I am trying to not go to the store untill we fininsh all the food we have.

    Not really a recipe, but an idea... Make a soup, with plenty of homemade croutons. I did this a while ago and it turned out great. Season/brown the beef, throw it in a pot with some water (or broth if you have it), add the veggies, maybe some beans or barley. Soups are all about the seasoning anyway--from there, add whatever you want to it. Tortilla chips, rice, noodles, etc... all good.

    Now for the bread.... Cut it up into chunks, and throw it in a big mixing bowl. In a small pan/pot (med heat) combine some butter, olive oil, garlic, and italian seasoning (basil/parsley/oregano). Let that cook a bit (to get the flavors infused into the oil/butter), then toss it with the bread chunks. Coat them all evenly, and toast them on a cookie sheet for ~5-8 minutes at 350F (basically, until they start to turn golden-brown). Throw some in a bowl, ladle some soup over top. Add some more croutons (just because they taste great... also, they absorb alot of broth, and again--tastes great), and enjoy.

          Adding bread to hamburger meat makes it go further. I also add some add some onion with that. When I have alot of bread, I freeze it. One idea that we use is freezing some bread and some kind of luncheon meat before we go on vacation to have something when we return.

          The other idea is to just have sandwiches i.e. egg salad, tuna, or whatever you like.

            When I moved to the midwest, I found people here put bread in stewed tomatoes. I imagine there are recipes for that online, too.

            You can make stuffing or dressing with bread. You can make your own "stovetop" dressing as a side dish.

                Welsh rarebit.

                Beans smashed on toast, English style.

                There is a dish that I think is Libyan that uses mashed garbanzo beans spread in a sandwich of toast, then the whole thing is dipped in an egg batter and fried. A seasoned tomato sauce is spooned over it on the plate. It is eaten with knife and fork.

                  My favorite is the old standby instant pizza: a little bit of tomato sauce, a little mozzarella cheese, some kind of spice like oregano, toast, and instant pizza!
