  • Want a Deal? AFTER Mother's Day Markdowns.

I just was going thru the mailed-out grocery ads and I was reminded of something. One of the hydrangeas that is currently growing in my garden came from the clearance sale the day AFTER Mother's Day one year. If you've got a grocer that also has a floral section, you might find a bargain on a potted plant that can be put outside. In my area, they are selling mini-rose bushes, cyclamen, azaleas, mums and hydrangeas. After Mom's Day whooo-haaaa has died down you might find a great deal! I think I paid $2 or $3 for mine. Today's hydrangea price at the grocer? $16.99+tax.

I just returned from a Lowes store which a friend had told me is a good source for clearance plants. There were a lot of Asiatic lilies marked down to$1.00 I bought 10 pots of nemesia for $2.50 total, 8 pots of perennial scabiosa for $2.00 (and I'll be able to divide these next year), a three gallon azalea still in full bud, and a tiny leaved dwarf holly for $1.00. Ha-ha: I really went to see if they had sweet potato slips. They did not.

I usually would have done most all my garden shopping by now, so I'm glad I held off.
