Instead of buying things new, get them used or for free on Craig's List.

Buy second hand and used items if possible.
      Live simply.
Do not be fascinated from merchandising.
      Invest more and more.
      Cut short consumption of fuel.
      Cut short extravagance.
Invest more and save more ,which is foremost important.

I wouldn't recommend you to buy used things for your self...
the only situation when you can buy used, is when you need smth for short time...

e.g. we bought a used coffee machine in our office, and after a month we steadily was fixing it during a year ... and we spent more money on repairing than if we bought new one ((
        sad but it's true

But that is just one small example. I have purchased used many times with no issues whatsoever.

There are some things I choose not to purchase used, computers being one of them, but there are far more things we buy used.....clothing, home decor, and on the list goes.

Thanks for reminding me I should be looking on Craigslist, my daughter needs a new dresser. I almost never buy new unless I need it now and can't wait for one to appear on craigslist or yardsale. Not only is it cheaper but my kids are not careful and have proven time and again I am not able to have nice (new) things.

ex my couch if it had been new and they spilled pepsi on it, it would have made my head spin like on the excorsist. Since it is used and cost only 100 I shrug, tell them "see this is why I don't buy new, I'd have to hurt ya." then whip out the rug shampooer and clean it best I can.

I could not agree with this any more. Starting with my car and quite a bit of furniture I try to buy used as much as I can. I have friends that really would look down on buying used stuff but I have bought, quality, clean furniture, appliances, and others that have years of life left in them.

Garage sales are specially good for this kind of stuff. You can find some really good stuff at very low prices on Saturday mornings.

Yes, Craigslist is a good place to find these used things at low prices.

Some of the things I would personally never buy used is a mattress, a bicycle (or motorcycle) helmet, and a child's car seat. These are for safety or health reasons only.

we buy antiques and refinish them ourselves. I managed to get some real bargains.

I would also recommend eBay and Amazon. You can sometimes find good items for cheap on eBay and Amazon almost always has the lowest prices.

I absolutely agree. Excluding personal items (including things like PCs) I buy anything I can used. Every HD TV in my house was picked up on craigslist when they were only a year old at almost half the price. People are so wasteful.

Yes, it is best to buy used things on craigslist, especially cars, electronics and kitchen appliances, furniture. But, in case of purchasing used TVs, it is not best to deal with Craigslist. TV is most overpriced item here. Thus, it is good to go for used things to save money, but you should also make a great research for such used things, including other sites similar to Craigslist or stores and online places.

I am not a good fan of second hand items. Don't go for them unless you don't have enough budget to purchase the new items.
