I agree! I stopped buying books and just go to the library. And if its a book I really want I get it off of half.com. I also sell books I know I'll never open again on there. Nice way to make some change. I also get DVDs and CDs from the library.

        Sold books yesterday

I actually thought about doing this instead of taking them to donate at the library. I had a large stack of metephysical books I hadn't read in a while. I took them to the religion store by my house and sold them. I only got 15% of the publishers price, but some I'd been given for free, and a few I bought while I worked at a bookstore and got a major discount. So I got a $20 gift certificate, that I need to spend. Decisions, decisions.

Whenever I am in Borders/B&N, I have a pad of paper and pen with me. Any book that sounds interesting, I put on a list. When I make a library run, I look for books on the list.

If I want to own a copy of a book that much, I will put it on a gift list, or I will buy it used off Amazon.

Anyone else have imput on where to find ebooks at discounted prices - or downloads for free? I really enjoy ebooks - I can bring 5-6 along on a trip and read to my heart's content. But it bothers me that the electronic versions cost the same as the paper copies despite limited production and distribution costs.

The NYPL link listed above is great - they currently have >700 books in the science fiction/fantasy category - but it is $100 a year for out of state subscribers.

Fictionwise.com often has discounts of up to 40%, but they have a limited selection.

              Any other suggestions?

Mine doesn't either. Also, I don't get a chance to go to the bookstore very often, and when I do, I can't stay very long.

Same here on everything you said. I love the book store so much. I always go in there and feel like I'm going to walk out of there with every book they have. I'm shocked that they just let people sit in there all day and read what they have. I do it quite often. I'm going to continue doing it until they start forcing people to buy or leave.

The libraries here are usually good at ordering certain books if you ask them to do so. The only problem is that they take forever to arrive. The selection is weak. That's why I go to B&N and Borders. Also, I ironically find Borders to be more comfortable and quiet than my local library.

I would just suggest going to your public library. You can request books and sometimes they will order them. I try to read one every month although I've taken a break lately. You can even read online now from your library.

Also, once you buy books from Amazon (NEW), they have a section that will let you read substantial portions of books before you buy them. It's really pretty neat.
