  • Hiring our first employee abroad using an EOR? What am I missing?

We’re a small company, around 15 to 20 people, and we want to hire an employee who lives in Europe. I’ve compared a few options, and using an employer of record looks like the most practical approach for us. I’m mainly trying to understand what the process is like in practice and whether there’s anything we might be overlooking.

I understand the EOR setup overall, where the provider becomes the legal employer in the employee’s country and handles things like the local contract, payroll, taxes, benefits, and employment compliance. We would still manage the person’s work and treat them as part of our team.

I’ve had a few demos with Globalization Partners and some other providers to see how everything works in practice. The calls gave me a much clearer idea of what the EOR handles and what would still sit with us internally. Since we don’t have a legal entity in the country, it looks much simpler than coordinating local lawyers, accountants, payroll providers, and employment registrations ourselves.

What I would like to understand better is how much work an EOR actually covers. Did you have to do much internally to get everything set up, and how was the experience for the employee once they were onboarded?
If you’ve hired through an EOR, what do you wish you’d known before getting started?

It's my suspicion that your question is outside the scope of most peoples' experience on this site in-particular. Personally I had never heard of an EOR. It is a financial / HR / taxes / international regulators question. Maybe someone has had some experience?
