When I purchased my Tacoma in 2020, the cost of insurance at the time was around $780 for 6 months. That was twice the $350 I paid for the Frontier, but it was a 20 year old truck. Since then, it has steadily increased about $100 each renewal. This current renewal was $1,517. I finally decided enough was enough. I dedicated Thursday to speaking with every insurance company in the county. I handed each agent a copy of my insurance coverage papers for both the truck and house, with the price redacted. This is what I came up with:
Afterwards I went back to Farmer's and presented them with the pricing and asked if they were still interested in keeping my business. He said Farmer's couldn't do any better, but he was also an agent for Progressive. He worked up a quote and it was $458. That price includes an 8% fee for him. It also includes increasing my liability from $50,000 to $100,000!
I've heard mixed opinions about Progressive, but considering I haven't needed to make a claim in 25 years, I think I am fine with them for now.
Ultimately I have been negligent in not shopping around (ever). I haven't started to consider how much money I may have wasted, but it is probably in the order of several thousand dollars.
