Re: I need a plan for paying off debt!

I do think it would help to pay on your high interest credit cards first. Then I would pay your vet and your dad last. Maybe you could give your Dad $5 a week, then he would know you are trying. I loaned money once to a friend. If she had given me $5 a week, I would have felt good and would have loaned to her again. But she didn't . She did not pay me for about 5 years.
Also, i am a dog lover and have always had them. I got them shots when they were puppies and that was it. My dog's have never been on heartworm/flea meds. One lived to be 20, another 14 and I currently have a 15 year old dog who has been to the vet once in her life, to get spayed.
$75 a month could really help out of those credit card bills.
Try taking advantage of those 1% cc offers. I don't think you would get them if your husbands credit was not pretty good, and that is usually whose credit they look at.

Oh and turn off your hot water unless you are using it. That will probably save you $30 a month on your electric bill. Make yourself a note to turn it on 20 minutes before a shower and turn it off immediately afterwards.

More good ideas - thanks all!

I've been trying a lot of the ideas at home to cut back on bills, and best of all, the vet bill is off my mind. My husband works for a fairly small company and gets along well with his boss. He explained the situation and his boss gave him a loan. He's only going to take out $25 per paycheck til it's paid off!!! I am so happy! I have way too much pride to do that, so I'm proud of hubby for taking the initiative. I know a lot of you said the vet bill was the least of my worries, but a couple days after I posted I got a notice from them saying it needed to be paid or off to collections! As far as the CC debt, I got a pre-approved 0% interest for balance transfers until '07 offer in the mail so I am going to roll our highest interest rate card onto that. Finally - the dad debt - I scoured my house and am going to sell some stuff on ebay to start get that ball rolling.

It's all a start and I'm feeling much better. Thanks to all - not only did you give me some great ideas, but you got me motivated to really tackle this problem head-on!

Now you are taking some steps in the right direction!! The vet bill will be paid, you will soon have no interest charges on your highest credit card for a year and you are selling some things to pay your dad back. Like I said, if I loaned a family member money and they paid me back just $5 a week (more if they could) I would consider them to be really trying. Keep track of what you pay your dad on paper too.
(And go turn off the hot water heater. It is on the circuit breaker, my husband installs a switch in all the houses he builds, so you can turn it off in the kitchen)

Our hot water heater is gas though, not electric... I wonder if it would save on that bill?

It sounds like you're definetely on the right track Amy. Keep plugging away at those bills and things will definetely get better for you. BTW: Hats off to hubby for taking the initiative to help. Gotta like that.

Great! Step by step you'll get there!

And I for one REALLY understand paying the Vet bill off, after my hubby the Vet is the most important man in my life If I have an emergency at 1AM he's here for me, and his family has to eat too! All to often people leave the Vet bill until last and thats NOT fair to them, not only that how can you look them in the face in the event of another emergency if you owe them? Our Vet is also a friend and his poor wife has spent so much time in small claims court this last year rather than in the office running the show.
