  • Business Expense Deductions

I'm an independent contractor and I'm trying to figure out the limits of any deductions I'm entitled. I won't meet with my CPA until January, but was curious about this so I can start lining up possible deductions for discussion.

Can anyone comment if these are allowed?

    1. Deducting computer depreciation if the computer is being used about 40% of the time for logging into the hospital system for patient follow-up, signing charts, etc.? I also spend an additional 20% researching finance issues (stocks, mutual funds, etc.).

    2. Deducting internet expenses (or portion thereof) for doing the above.

    3. Deducting a multi-function printer/copier/fax that is used for business purposes about 50% of the time (fax about 90% of the time).

    4. Deducting iPhone depreciation that is used in the hospital for ePocrates (drug database), PEPID (treatment guidelines, diagnostic information), etc.? The phone is used for personal use about 50% of the time.

    5. Deducting a portion of my cell phone bill as the phone is used for patient follow-up (gotta love keeping the Press-Ganey scores up) about 25% of useable airtime minutes.
