I give a lot of items to non profit organizations. The other day I took a whole carload of clothes from neighbors on my street who couldn't be bothered to the local Salvation Army store. I don't mind doing it because if I didn't, the clothes would end up in the dump and most still have a lot of life.

I seem to remember reading about a book that tells you how much you can deduct for items like shirts, pants, dresses, etc on your tax return. Does anyone know this book and where I can get it? And can I take the deduction even though I was given the clothes from my neighbors?

I think the book you are referring to is called Its Deductible - Cash For Your Used Clothing. I did a quick check at amazon, and as I write this now, it is not in stock (Click Here)

There is another one called Its Deductible: Turning Non-Cash Donations Into Dollars, but it is also out of stock as I write this. The CD Version appears to be in stock, but is quite pricey.
