  • Record High Gas Prices Predicted This Year

After dipping the last few months, gasoline prices are once again on the rise. Gasoline prices in January rose more than 7% which isn't a good sign for drivers since January is typically a slow driving month. Many experts are now predicting that gasoline prices this year may top the record high prices of last year when traveling starts to pick up. Some are predicting short term price spikes reaching as high as $2.50 a gallon this summer.

This week Lundberg Survey released the prices it found at 7,000 gas stations across the country. It showed an average price of $1.91 nationwide for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel. According to government figures, the price of regular unleaded gasoline started the year at $1.78 a gallon. Gasoline prices are highest on the West Coast, averaging a penny under $2.00 a gallon and lowest in the Rocky Mountain region where they average $1.83 a gallon.

The average price of gasoline last year reached above $2.00 a gallon in May. That is only 10 cents below the current price of gasoline at a time that it isn't in high demand. That means that getting your car in top shape so that it cost the least amount possible to run will save you a tremendous amount of money this spring.
