I heard that if you swich cell phone providers that you can keep your same phone number now. Is that true?

Yes, it is true. I did it a few months ago and was able to keep my same phone number.

Yes, you can now keep your number. However, if you were under a long term contract with your previous provider, there will be a large cancellation fee. Even if you were under a monthly contract, the company you're leaving may very well charge you for an extra month of service even if you don't use it...it's a problem that is upsetting quite a few people these days.

Yes, most areas of the United States you are able to do this now. You are able to port the number as long as you are out of the contract. Most carriers have step by step instructions.
