Fact is, in many other countries, people who are born in poverty have no realistic hope of doing anything excepting living their entire life in poverty. In America, you do have opportunities to do something about it through many routes.
I've had this discussion a few times. I work in the welfare business; it's a topic that comes up. The thing for me is: yes, an outstanding child can be born into very poor circumstances and end up very successful. My issue is that we shouldn't require our kids to be outstanding to escape poverty. A child with regular gifts as far as brains and talent should be able to get out of poverty.

I agree. Let's just make sure we educate them out of it - and not try and "handout" them out of it. That doesn't work.

        Wealth and Rich

Here's the definition for me the wealth and rich. Well, wealth is the number of days you can survive without physically working (or anyone in your household physically working) and still maintain your standard living. Wealth is measured in time, not dollars. The difference between wealthy and rich is very simple. It's knowledge. Wealthy people know how to make money. Rich people only have money. Once you know how to make money, you can build sustainable wealth. The money never stops coming. If you have a reversal of fortune, it's not a big deal. In other words, a wealthy person will always be wealthy, whereas someone who is merely rich will only be so for a short period of time until the money is gone.
