  • How do you get to work?

I broke down and bought a light rail pass for Sacramento. I hate mass transit (I know it is good but I love my car!) It is hard to get used to it but I have been riding for a week and a half and have saved money in parking. My place of employment will let us buy it for 35 instead of 80 a month so it is a good deal. I miss my car and wonder how I would get out of the city in a hurry if there was an incident (I work in emergency preparedness, what else do you expect?) I have to drive to the station I use, even though it is only about 2 miles as the road is unsafe to ride a bike or walk. But I have decided I want to take a vacation and can save more money this way.

Also, never driving my car to work (except Wednesdays off site meetings and I need to pick up my mail twice a week.) will allow me to save about 100 per month toward a trip to Mexico in the fall.

I use my bike. I have to get an apartment that is close to some alcoholic bars to be able to afford an apartment near my job.

It is totally woth it, though.

Funny you should ask. I walk.

In 2004 the townhouse complex where I had lived for a number of years was bought for a condo converstion project. I had to move quickly, and found a place within two miles of the office.

What I considered a misfortune (losing my townhouse and garden) has turned out to be a stroke of luck. I'm within walking distance of the office, a supermarket, branches of the public library and post office, a Dollar Store, and a selection of inexpensive restaurants.

My neighbors find my pedestrian ways a bit eccentric, but my annual car use has dropped by over 10,000 miles, with attendant savings on gas, maintenance and insurance. Plus, I benefit from the regular exercise.

I bike to work, and it costs me nothing.
I don't understand why people would hate public transport. I used to use it back when I went to university and I enjoyed the bus ride to school every morning. It saved me the irritation of driving, dealing with lousy drivers, traffic jams and road rage. In winter time I did not have to scrape the ice from my windshield or sweep the snow off. I found it a great time to sit down and read a book. Public transit worked for me.

From August to October last year I rode my bike 4 miles to work. We were saving for a second car, and the weather was nice so I figured I'd get some exercise too. Then it started to get colder, and we got a second car at the end of October. I've driven since.

I'm changing jobs now, and working where I will be going to grad school, which is more like 8 miles away, and involves the expressway, so bike is not so much an option anymore.

This is still low mileage compared to how much I had to drive before we moved here-- I've only put on 5,000 miles a little over 7 months, and that's with 2 trips to see my parents 350 miles away.

I just open my eyes and I am at work

but DH drives..we have looked into mass transit it would be around 10 miles of walking (walk 3 to bus, ride to nother stop, walk to another ride to close to work, then walk again...so not worthg it!)

and we looked at carpooling, but DH is the only one interested in saving money really, plus he goes in at 7 the orther dudes go in later..

I have to drive. I do errand when I am off with the bike.

It's a little over 1 mile to work. I drive most times, silly as it is, partially because I have a water aerobics class right after work I have to drove to.

I'm thinking of cutting out the water aeroboics and walking to work 4 days a week (the fifth can be a treat and/or errand day.)

I just got a recumbe excercise bike (free) which is why I'm thinking no water aerobics.

I put about 11,000 miles on my car in three years.

I have to drive, unfortunately. I would consider public transportation if there were any around, but when you live in a town of 2000...there just aren't a lot of options. You have to have a car when you live in the boonies...plus I do a lot of driving for my second job (real estate) - there's just no way to get around that when you have to go to multiple houses.
I probably put 12-15,000 miles on my car each year.

I just shuffle out from my bedroom and I'm at work. I've worked at home for so long now, driving TO work somewhere would probably make me nuts.

My commute is all the way down the hall and into the kitchen to make coffee, with a stop at the front door to let the dog out.

I work at the same school my kids go to. We can walk but it is 25 mins up hill and I have enough trouble getting them out the door as it is. So we drive. On nice days we walk home..must to their chagrin.
