Yeah, the real question is how much it gets enforced. I know if Florida, a lot of hotels and rental home owners weren't taking reservations from folks from NY, NJ, and CT so it was getting enforced that way. But if you were flying in or driving in and staying with family, there was no enforcement.[/QUOTE]

here in australia if you cross a border...you have to sign in when you get there there are police on all borders and have to say where you are and if you have to self isolate they will come to your house to check..several times a day all times day/night and you do get a $1100 fine each time and they can lock you up if your not complying

Then you've got places like Phoenix where there is a mandatory mask law with a $250 fine for violating it and yet Trump came and had a big rally where neither he nor any of the attendees (who also weren't social distancing) wore masks but no fines or citations were issued.

In many states where these rules have been put released ... Sometimes enforcement is not possible without it being voted on by state government not just this governor or mayor said this.... If they can convince people just to OBEY because I say so........... then great....... otherwise the fines/ and repercussions are just scare tactics
.... NO one I have seen or heard about in my state has had ANY fines etc.... even those who opened before bans were lifted. This state literally lifted mandate one day before a judge was going to rule whole thing worthless.

This is what comes when so many people simply pick and choose what laws they obey or are enforced. ... With selective enforcement they risk too many lawsuits when often states or cities
are seeing huge deficits with no tax stream with so much shut down.....
It should also have people realize when we pick and choose what to enforce it can end up being something you personally do not agree with..... Ask Seattle lol

Yeah, I'm here in Phoenix right now. In general most folks I'm seeing are following the rule, but frankly, I know that I often don't even think about it until I get somewhere and see a sign on/near the door reminding of the requirement. But as for a Trump rally (didn't realize he was ever here...though I did see one of the Air Force's DV jets on the ramp at our base recently, though it definitely wasn't AF1).... As has been pointed out, he's made the non-wear of masks a point of pride among his die-hard supporters. And which members of the police force are likely to volunteer to support a Trump rally? Trump supporters, or folks who vehemently disagree with him?

As for enforcement.... As with other minor fine-able civil offenses (jaywalking, littering, parking violations, etc.), it's likely not something that the police are focused on. Sort of goes back to the police discussion, but what should be the focus of police efforts?

It is a huge problem that there has been no Federal response or guidance. Every state, and even individual cities and towns, have made up a patchwork of rules and regulations. The law can literally be different across the street if you happen to live on the border of your town. Plus, as we've said, it's very much a partisan issue. Look at Florida, for example. The Republican governor refuses to enact a mask law so the individual Democratic mayors are doing it piecemeal. The same is true in Texas and Arizona. The states won't take action so each city has to do it themselves which just creates more confusion trying to keep track of what the law is in every town you happen to be visiting or passing through.

The phased reopenings are chaotic, too, because again, every state and even individual cities, are making up their own phases that differ from town to town. We might be in phase 3 here while down the road they are in phase yellow. What does that mean exactly? There should have been a national set of guidelines for everyone to follow so that there was a consistent plan across the board.

President Donald Trump said some Americans might wear face masks not as a way to prevent the spread of coronavirus but as a way to “signal disapproval of him.”

Exactly. He has been front and center of making masks a political issue rather than a public health issue. That's also likely a big reason why Republican governors are reluctant to disobey him and issue mask laws even though their states are seeing alarmingly high COVID numbers.

Well, gosh, I never thought of it that way. I just thought it was a sign of taking precautions for self and others, in the middle of an unmitigated pandemic. In the absence of a vaccine or even reliable or available testing, masks and distancing are our only defense.

                        ::sigh::

I had to stop writing multiple versions of this reply, because it kept coming out as overtly political opinion. But suffice it to say, I look forward with some hope to the elections this November. Perhaps there will be an opportunity to lower the temperature of our increasingly hostile political climate....

Oh, I know that feeling. I've typed and deleted probably hundreds of posts here and elsewhere for that very reason. I try my very best to stick to factual information as it relates to political issues though I know I haven't always been 100% successful in doing so.

On the mask topic specifically, it's drives me absolutely nuts that it has been made into a partisan issue. Sorry, but the virus doesn't give a darn if you are a Republican or Democrat or Independent or Socialist or Communist. The rules for keeping yourself and others safe are the same universally.

And this is why self isolation continues to matter, even if - heck especially if - you feel fine. You may unknowingly transmit COVID to everyone you come in contact with.

Stay home unless you absolutely must go out.
Wear a mask ANY TIME you are around other people who don't live with you, indoors and outdoors.
Even with a mask, maintain social distancing.
