Well, this isn't quite a stupid justification for spending, it's just a stupid justification.... I knew a girl who when she went to the bar, would always (and yes, I mean always, this is not an exageration) drink to the point she would get sick because she would not only order herself drinks until she was wasted, she would finish off everyone elses drinks as well. Her reasoning was 'I don't want it to go to waste'........

Obviously, she wasn't referring to her liver or brain cells.

        Brace yourself for this one:

        Cars are a good investment.

Not kidding, I know someone who believes this and has gone through more cars in the past ten years than I will go through in a lifetime.

"I didn't want to be reminded of my ex"

After trading in a 2005 Trailblazer for a brand new 2007 Trailblazer.

Now she complains that she's so far in debt and can't sell the car because she owes too much on it.

I got my first house for a great deal because of this!

How about "you can write it off" or "it's tax deductible"

"Most of the people I know who whine the loudest about gas and food prices are the same ones who have no savings, payments on a flat-screen TV and a dozen other things, and who dine out or pick up fast food three or four times a week, burning through both food money and gas money... *sigh*... But they don't see it that way." Not always

              My best ones...
"How will I ever buy work clothes if I quit working" (What?)

"He really likes working two jobs, besides it gives me time to unwind" (rum and coke in hand)

"You can't take it when your gone right?" (Wrong, your kids can)

My all time favourite, we were going to the pharmacy to get meds but my friend just HAD to stop at this flea market thing and buy a bunch of crap. I was a broke 15 year old so, I didn't care. When we get to the pharmacy her medicine is way more expensive than she thought and says "I can't afford that! It's too expensive." Then on her way out buys a pack of cigarettes. !!! (Has bronchitics)

My mom, "I can't afford health food" While eating Doritos and Mountain Dew!

Dad, "I can't get you school clothes," two weeks later dad walks in with a new Sony and games, "Hey wanna play some games?"

Yeah I went to foster care.

Wait, did you really? go to foster care? Thats terrible, I'm sorry! Good for you to be able to see your parents mistakes and avoid them!

And not paying for medicine in order to buy junk is the American standard.

That goes right into another dumb justification: How about not buying something that will save you money in the long run, because its "not a necessity".

I surely disagree with this statement. I do think the overwhelming majority would and do pay for any necessary medicine before they buy junk. Actually, most Americans are insured, and so have been pre-paying for the possibility of medical need even before they take the paycheck to the bank. On top of that, I still say most Americans who need medicine will buy it to the exclusion of buying junk.

And could you give some examples of the "not buying something that will save you money in the long run, because its 'not a necessity'." Are we talking about not buying a low water use washing machine, for example?

I'm a physician in a poor area. I see patients every day who tell me they are having trouble affording their meds but the vast majority of them smoke, many of them drink alcohol and lots of them buy lottery tickets every day. Maybe if they stopped doing those things, they would be better able to afford their meds.

Unfortunately, lots of people do not make their health a priority in their lives. I'm not saying that is true of the majority, but it does describe a significant number of people.

I think it is men who are notorious for NOT going to the doctor when they need to go to the doctor.

I also have noticed that people will pay for teeth whitner rather than go to the dentist for a cleaning.

And finally, I am not proud to admit this, it wasnt a shining moment in my thought process, but I kept this notion going for a couple of years...
I put off going to the obgyn until I wanted to have a baby. Why pay $ for something when I cant afford to pay for medicine to fix it if somethings wrong? And why pay $ for something if I dont even care about test results at the moment because I'm not having a baby anytime soon? Stupid thinking, I know. But it was a combination of being young and invincable and having weird financial priorities.

Usually breaks even at best, loses more times than not and sometimes come back with some extra.

Oh, another one "I am getting a free hotel room" and "I am getting free meals from the casino".

It's a 200 mile drive down there, he's got a bed at home, and there is turkey in the fridge.

I'd guess the rooms go for $100 to $200 a night (I dont know). That said only expense the room would cost the casino, apart from lost revenue, for giving it away is cleaning/electricity/pillow mints, lets say $20 total.

The free dinner would have run $25 or so, but probably cost the casino $10 at most (guessing again).

So, he burns $80 worth of gas for what is truely only $30 free. In the mean time he stands to leave $200 or so with the casino which makes up their expense 6 or 7 times over.

Maybe if they quit doing those things they wouldn't need their meds. Not that healthy living prevents everything, but they may have found themselves to be in a much better position if they never did these things, or atleast not to excess.
