Re: The most expensive thing you have bought for yourself

About 2 yrs ago I bought myself a full size Tempurpedic bed set for around $1400.00.

It's been a wise investment. I have a bad back and was always restless on regular mattresses, tossing and turning, always waking up tired.

Now, I wake up refreshed, no sore back, have been able to stop seeing the chiropractor for almost a year.

I was a bit apprehensive about the purchase beforehand because it seemed like there was a lot of "hype" about this type of bedding/mattress to be found on tv, papers, and the internet.

I would recommend this bed to anyone who asks about it. The bed should last me for a good 20 yrs or so and if it does it will average out to $70 a year. Since I spend about 1/3 of my life in bed, I figured why not get something of quality?

Mine would be a big screen TV. (68 inches) It was $4000, but I got the store floor display, so it was knocked down to $3,200. I had a Sears certificate that said if I charged anything I would get 10% off. (So, I got an additional $320 off) My card was paid in full, so I charged the TV-there was a promotion going on at Sears that for a big ticket item, you got 90 days same as cash. I had the cash for the TV, so I let it sit in savings for 90 days to draw a little interest, then I went into the local Sears and paid it off in full. The main reason I got it was (before I got divorced) my husband was having bad eye problems, and had several eye surgeries. It was impossable for him to read or watch a regular TV. He could see this one fine. He left it when he moved out as he didn't have a room big enough for it where he was moving too.

Well, actually I duped my husband into buying it for me. He told me I could have a new sewing machine of my choice for Christmas one year. So I pick out a $4000 Bernina sewing/embroidery machine. He renigged, but later relented.

I had a girlfriend who did that--he threw a fit, but now, 7 years later he is quite happy-she now has a booming embrodery business-does monagrams and such-started with that machine and a small ad in the local paper. She has since paid for that machine over and over and does it out of her basement-which enables her to be an at home mom now.

An above ground pool at the end of summer. $1850. Our previous one had collapsed and we had this awful hole. Problem is, it's a little bigger & taller than the previous one. Hub will have to make changes to the deck & ground. He is a wee bit upset about me creating new work for him. The project will begin in the spring...

We have spent thousands on furnishings for our home and on landscaping and an inground pool, but if you are talking something personal, I guess it would have to be $500. for a suit and $300. for a purse.

Re: The most expensive thing you have bought for yourself

since i'm young and just scraping by i haven't spend much of anything on myself although my mom probably spent some money (we didn't have much) on me as a kid...
for spending on myself, the most expensive thing i can remember right now was about $115 for my wedding dress, after that is $35 for a clearanced formal dress, $30 for a vintage fur jacket, $20-25 for my prom dresses and it mostly gets cheaper after that all the way down to a quarter or less...
if you added up my wardrobe (accumulated over the last decade) it would add up to a lot (for me) but probably not as much as some people spend on one outfit... especially if you don't count the wedding dress...
i love my clothes and have tons but would sell lots of them in a minute if i could get any money for them... i was selling some stuff (not junk, stuff like Gap, mossimo, etc. that my SIL gave me but wasn't my style) at the flea market this past week and even at quarter each, 5/$1 it was difficult as very few people wear my size... i ended up giving away 3 grocery bags worth of clothes... i don't mind too bad as i always look for people to share with...

I would have to say our trip to Hawaii last year was the most I ever spent on one thing. And we saved for a long time to go. Had a great time, can't wait to go again.

glad to hear you had a great time in hawaii... it can be a great place....
i guess if we count travel, which i know some of you have, DH and I together spent quite a bit on our trip to Vietnam... we kept a spending log (yeah, i know) and i think we spend around 1K which is a lot of money for us...

Our first computer. At the time, my job was offering interest free loans for a computer with a 36 month term. I paid 1800 for it in 1998...it has since died, and now I just use the business computer.

Maybe $300-ish for a nice down comforter. My bed is an important place to me. I don't have that once anymore, I have a hand-me-down from my dad that I've had maybe five years.

$3900 for LASIK on both eyes. We recently spent more on flooring, but I don't consider that a purchase for myself only.

Well I love to travel as well, so I've had some fairly expensive trips. I just bought myself the $200 reading chair recliner but I plan on keeping it until I'm ready for the nursing home and it's going with me in about 50+ years. I did buy myself a beautiful turquoise necklace once on a trip to Santa Fe for 150.00. The most expensive was paying 6800.00 cash + about 200 in dealer prep for my truck, but you said we couldn't count vehicles. That's about it. Much more than $200-300 I start going into sticker shock and have to be resucitated. I was prepared to pay 600.00 to get the right reading chair, so I've some left over from that to spend on me that I haven't yet decided what the next 'thing' is that I might want. No rush - I'm happy with it in the bank earning interest!
