  • Cutting the Cable Cord

Our Verizon FIOS package expires, we are paying $115 a month for cable + internet + phone. I'm cancelling the cable and phone, and will be paying $59.99 month for 2 years. We are also able to get comcast, and their first year teaser rate is $39.99, then goes up to $62. but then I'd need to hope my old router and modem works, then pay a $50 installation fee, then every 6 months call up and fight them about getting me a new special deal for the $39.99. So for now, I'll stick with FIOS, but will ask around and reevaluate what others pay in 2 years.

I bought an HD antenna on Amazon, an OOMA, for voice over ip phone. I work from home, and my office provides a way to make phone calls though the computer, but the computer is such crap that I don't trust it. That and when I'm on the phone for long periods of time (like multiple calls to comcast and verizon to get the best rate) it's nice knowing I don't have to worry about minutes.

Ooma will be 7.99 a month for 2 years (depreciating the price of the box) then after that $4 a month for the taxes for 911.

I won't miss TV at all. With 2 little kids we don't have time to watch it, and half the time I end up watching tv shows on my tablet. We won't be going the netflix/amazon prime route either, I wasn't impressed with their catalog with my trials, and would rather have the money.

We are only saving $32 a month cutting cable + phone for the first two years, so it's easy to have other expenses suck up that void. I bumped up my 401K contribution 1% and espp plan 2% to celebrate this little savings.

Nice -- no reason to have bundled cable packages these days. And double points for increasing the 401k contribution.

Cut the cable cord about two years ago. Had AT&T and they made me very Mad. So, I gave them the boot and got an HD antenna at Walmart and haven't regreted it yet. I did keep internet with At&T, have had great internet service with them. If I miss a show on one of the three big networks, I login with a friend's cable login and watch it on my laptop. NO BIG LOSS!!!

I dont see a point in traditional cable packages....you can watch pretty much anything you want on Hulu or Netflix -- i usually subscribe for 3 months at a time to each using gift cards, and you can stream it to your tv, kindle, wherever.

Cable companies need to figure out a way to get on board with a la carte entertainment, and move away from the pricy packages and bundles.

I haven't told DW yet, but when DD goes off to college in a couple of months, I really want to cut back the cable service. I don't think I'd drop it entirely but I would like to cut back to a smaller selection of channels and lower price. Cutting it out entirely doesn't save as much as you'd think because they charge a lot more for internet if you don't also have TV so that offsets some of the savings. Plus we'd need to buy and install an antenna.

Congratulations! I gave up cable a long time ago - commercials and news that was 90% bad any way yes, I decided I could do without. It was difficult at first but I found that not watching TV freed up a lot of my time. I don't even watch basic channels although I have an antenna. The most TV I watch is during football season - other than that I stick to video games and movies. =)

I know this is a little odd, but I have never had a television in my home. It seems like such a huge waste of time. And the idea of paying for TV is abhorrent to me.

I do watch DVDs on my computer, and an amazon prime account. That is plenty of entertainment.for me.
