Something happened and you no longer have your permanent ID card. You are stuck, at least for a little bit, with just a temporary ID. Of course, your bills don’t stop coming just because you don’t have permanent ID right now. Can you cash a check with temporary ID?
What is a Temporary ID?
A temporary ID is, as the name suggests, a form of ID that expires within a short period of time after being issued. Oftentimes, people get a temporary ID because they have lost their permanent ID. They apply for a new permanent ID. In the meantime, between applying and actually receiving it, they can use a temporary ID.
People may also get a temporary ID when they can no longer use a regular Driver’s License. For example, in the state of Arizona, when someone’s driver’s license is suspended, they can apply for a six-month temporary ID. The ID is not a driver’s license; their driving rights are still suspended. However, it serves the other purposes of ID, such as getting entry in a bar.
Note that every state is different when it comes to the temporary ID. Expiration dates range a lot, with some temporary forms of ID only good for 30 or 45 days. Other states, like California, do not issue temporary IDs at all. Therefore, whether or not you can even get one depends upon your location.
Can You Cash a Check with a Temporary ID?
If you have a temporary ID, then it should act exactly like your regular ID. (Of course, as in the aforementioned case with Arizona, if it’s an ID that’s not a license, then it won’t act like a license.) This means that you should be able to use the ID to perform daily tasks. You can use your temporary ID to get into a bar. And yes, you should be able to cash a check with a temporary ID.
That said, people do sometimes run into difficulties trying to cash a check with a temporary ID. The most common problem is when the temporary ID does not have a photo. Many banks and check cashing services require photo ID. Therefore, you may need a second form of photo ID in addition to your temporary ID in order to cash a check. A student ID, military ID, or passport are examples of second forms of ID that all have photos.
Tips to Cash a Check with a Temporary ID
If you want to cash a check with a temporary ID, here are some tips that can help make it easier:
- Cash the check at your own bank where you already have an account.
- Use check cashing services in the same state where the temporary ID was issued.
- Carry a second form of ID, especially if your temporary ID does not include a photo.
- Some check cashing places do cash checks without photo ID. Note that these places typically have high fees for check cashing. Call around in your area as a last resort.
- Deposit the check directly into your bank account via ATM or mobile deposit. Then use your ATM card to withdraw the cash out.
- Sign the check over to a second party that has ID. They can cash the check themselves and give you the money. Of course, make sure that you only do this with someone that you trust.
