Even though Memorial Day has nothing to do with shopping, it has become a major sales event for retail outlets. Stores are blanketing the TV with ads promoting their Memorial Day sales in an attempt to drive traffic to their stores for the beginning of the summer shopping season. The confusion of whether or not stores are open or closed occurs because even though Memorial Day is a federal holiday, when all federal employees get the day off, it’s not a national holiday where everybody gets the day off work. This means that each individual retailer gets to decide whether or not to close for the day. While the vast majority of them remain open, not all of them do. Below you will find a list of stores that will be open and closed for Memorial Day on Monday, May 25, 2015.

Costco

Costco is closed Memorial Day. Costco is the one major retailer which closes for more federal holidays than most. Memorial Day is one of the seven days Costco closes to allow their employees the chance to observe Memorial Day with their families and friends. For those who are planning to stack up on supplies for the long weekend, it’s important to note that Costco will be closed to observe Memorial Day.

Target

Target is open on Memorial Day. Target is one of the major retailers which remains open on Memorial Day, and it also celebrates the holiday with a sales event focusing on camping gear, summer outfits, summer home decor and patio furniture. For those who want to spend a part of the holiday shopping, you will be able to do so at target stores.

Walmart

Walmart is open Memorial Day. There is only a single day during the year when Walmart isn’t open for business. That is on Christmas Day. All Walmart stores will be open for their regular business hours on Memorial Day. Walmart typically has Memorial Day sales, but the company has not updated its Memorial Day sales page, although the website does offer many discounts on summer related goods.
