Save Money on Renovations With Low-Cost Building Materials

February 6, 2023 by Sam Hayes

Saving money on your remodel or complete renovation project is always a priority. There are several ways that you can cut costs during your remodeling. One of the best ways to save money on a project is to select low-cost materials. Here are some low-cost materials that you can use in your next home improvement project to reduce costs.

Choose Recycled Materials

Recycled materials are a great option to save money while upgrading your home. Recycled materials that have been refurbished to like new condition are not only good for your wallet; they are good for the environment. Sinks, vanities, kitchen cabinets, and more can all be purchased secondhand and reused in your project.

You can expect to pay a fraction of the cost for recycled materials that you would pay for new materials. Additionally, you would be keeping the goods out of the landfill. It may take you a little longer to source recycled materials, but in the end, it will save you quite a bit of money by using recycled materials.

Buy Materials Off-Season

Let’s say you plan a yard renovation. If you buy pavers for the project in the spring (the in-season) you will pay more. According to The Landscapers Association, there are three types of pavers; concrete, brick, and natural stone. Each type of paver will be more expensive in the spring when everyone is trying to buy the materials they need for their yard.

The same is true of roofing materials. For example, according to RemodelingCosts.org, metal roofing materials deliver an excellent ROI. You can expect a 70%-87% return on metal roofing. However, if you purchase the materials in the spring during the height of the roofing season, you will pay more for the materials, and you can expect an ROI at the lower end of the spectrum.

Consider buying materials in advance of your spring projects. Buying materials in the middle of the winter could save you money.

Get Familiar With Material Options

You should get familiar with the available material options and how they affect the project’s outcome. For example, if you renovate the plumbing in your home, you should know that copper piping is the most expensive option, and PVC piping is much cheaper. Both types of piping will get the job done.

The same is true with fencing materials. According to Rehab Financial Group, a fence adds value to your home. That value can range from $1,500-$5,000, depending on the material. Metal and stone fences (the most expensive types) come with a projected return on your investment of 70%; other types of fences, like wood and vinyl (less expensive types), come with a 50% ROI.

Spending less on fencing material still comes with a very high return and ultimately gets the job done. Weigh your material options carefully to save money.

Check Unexpected Places for Deals

There are a lot of deals out there for construction materials that you may be missing out on. A lot of people make the mistake of thinking that they will find the best deals online. However, when you visit your local home improvement store, you may find one-off deals that are unavailable online. For example, someone ordered countertops, but they came in the wrong size; instead of discarding the material, the store offered them a deep discount.

Discontinued flooring is another big savings option you will find at your local home improvement store that you will not find online. Don’t discount the high-end flooring stores either, because you may also find deals there. Home improvement stores often sell open-box goods, dented and scratched goods, and floor models of different construction materials on the cheap.

There are many ways to cut the cost of materials for your home improvement project, but you do have to put a little more effort into the process. Learn more money-saving tips today.
