Columbus Day is on the horizon. While many people are looking forward to a day off from work, some are also wondering if they’ll be able to handle some errands on the holiday. If you’d like to know what will be open on Monday, October 11, 2021, here’s a look at what’s open and closed on Columbus Day 2021.
By and large, retail stores are open on Columbus Day. Plus, the vast majority will use their typical Monday operating schedules, and some are even holding sales to attract shoppers.
Here is a list of some of the chain stores that open up for Columbus Day:
- Bed, Bath & Beyond
- Best Buy
- BJs Wholesale Club
- Dollar Tree
- Home Depot
- Old Navy
- Sam’s Club
Many small businesses may open as well. However, independent locations can set their own schedules, so you may want to check in advance to confirm they’ll be open.
Like retail stores, grocery stores will mainly be open on Columbus Day. Additionally, most will use their standard Monday opening and closing schedules.
Here are just some of the grocery stores that will open on Columbus Day:
- Giant Eagle
Drug Stores and Pharmacies
In most cases, chain drugs stores and pharmacies like Walgreens, Rite Aid, and CVS are open on Columbus Day. However, there may be alterations to the pharmacy counter operating hours, and some in-store services may not be available.
Gas Stations and Convenience Stores
Both gas stations and convenience stores are usually open on Columbus Day. In some rare cases, convenience stores may operate on a reduced schedule, though this isn’t overly common.
It’s important to note that pay-at-the-pump is typically available regardless of whether there is an employee on-site. As a result, you can get fuel at any time if you’re using a pump that accepts debit and credit cards.
On Columbus Day, restaurants are typically open, particularly chain restaurants. Independent restaurants may or may not open, depending on the owner’s preference. As a result, you may want to call ahead if you want to eat at a non-chain restaurant on the holiday.
Banks and Credit Unions
Banks and credit unions are typically closed on federal holidays, including Columbus Day. However, there are some exceptions, though they tend to be few and far between.
ATMs will operate on the holiday. The same goes for online banking services. But transactions may not start processing until the next business day, so keep that in mind.
U.S. Stock Market
Unlike with some other federal holidays, the US stock markets – the NYSE and NASDAQ – are open on Columbus Day. However, the bond market follows the SIFMA schedule and is closed on Monday, October 11, 2021.
Federal, state, and municipal agencies are usually closed on Columbus Day, aside from a few exceptions. Public safety and security organizations typically have at least some personnel working during holidays. Additionally, some state or local governments – including many agencies in Washington State – do open.
The post office closes on Columbus Day, so there will be no mail pickup or delivery, and you can’t complete transactions that require an employee.
However, UPS and FedEx are open, giving you an alternative if you need to ship something on the holiday.
If you’d like to spend time outdoors on Columbus Day, you’re in luck. National Parks are open on the holiday.
K-12 Schools, Colleges, and Universities
While some schools, colleges, and universities close for Columbus Day, others don’t. As a result, you’ll want to check with your school (or its district) to confirm whether classes will be in session on the holiday.
For dorming students, even if classes aren’t in session, some access to facilities usually continues during the holiday. For example, cafeterias or student centers may open. However, they could be operating on modified holiday schedules, so it’s best to check in advance to see if they are closing early if you’d like to use them.
Whether public libraries open or close on Columbus Day is usually based on the state or municipalities’ holiday schedule. If you’d like to take a trip to the library on the holiday, check with your preferred location in advance to see if they’re open.
Garbage services might or might not run on October 11, 2021. Check with your garbage service provider to see if pickups are moving forward if that Monday would be your usual garbage day.
Additionally, landfills may or may not be open. If you’d like to drop something off, check the location’s holiday schedule before making the trip.
