Can’t make ends meet on your monthly expenses or are you just looking for a flexible job? Well you can become an online tutor and earn income up to thousands of dollars per month. It is as easy as it sounds. All you need to do is help students by answering their questions, and you’ll get paid.
After trying several online tutoring sites, the one at the top of the list is Studypool. The company is described as an online platform that connects students with tutors for online help. Studypool has a strong reputation and attracts many students due to the flexibility of the platform and satisfaction guarantee. This means it’s a great place to tutor as there are many students and questions posted every day.
Like any job, it takes some time to get the hang of how to tutor successfully at Studypool, but compared to other sites, it was very easy to use. And in all honesty, it wouldn’t hurt other sites to have a friendlier and prettier UX, but that’s just a personal preference. After being a tutor for Studypool for a few months, it’s clear that the platform’s policy are geared to ensure students are happy with the tutoring sessions and keep coming back. Ultimately, it takes a bit of effort on the tutor’s end to get the policies down (like always saying goodbye to students) but this really pays off as this improves your reputation and stats, and then it’s easier to get work.
How to apply to be a Studypool tutor:
Virtually anyone can apply to be a tutor. You can sign up here. As part of the application, Studypool makes you write an essay based on a topic they provide. There are some options, so you can choose which one you want to write about. There’s also a true/false quiz to check that you understand the policies. All in all, the application takes about 30 minutes, but that’s what you’d expect with a job interview so that seems fair. If you pass the application and get accepted, then you are good to go!
Tutoring as a Studypool tutor.
After being accepted as a tutor, you answer three practice questions. These are very quick and give you an opportunity to earn badges based on what subjects you are knowledgeable in. This is really important because without subject badges, it’s really difficult to get work. It’s like an Uber driver with no star-ratings. Until you’ve built up a reputation, these badges are the only thing that will make it more likely for students to choose you to answer questions.
To get assigned to a question, you need to bid on a list of questions. Each question can be skimmed through before placing a bid. Usually students have a set budget and deadline, and if you bid on those same conditions, you are more likely to be assigned to answer their questions.
Sometimes, if you feel that the student budget is not fair for the question, you can bid a higher amount, and alongside this, you can extend the deadline. If you do get assigned as a tutor for a question, you have to be courteous, like saying “hello”, “goodbye”, etc. Basically, keep things professional.
Earning as a Studypool tutor:
Whenever you are done answering a question, the student has three days to review you. Once they do that, the payment is released to you. In this time, they can ask for edits, etc. But, if everything is good, they usually pay right then and there. And if they don’t review you, then the payment is released after those 72 hours are up.
When you receive any payment, Studypool keeps 15%-30% as a commission for using the site. The other 70% is yours, and you can withdraw through various payment options like Paypal, Transferwise, Payoneer, or Western Union, whichever is more convenient for you, wherever you are in the world. You do need to have more than $50 on your tutor balance to be able to make a cash withdrawal.
Obviously, the more questions you answer, the better you will do. And this will help you expand your student circle and be invited to answer more questions without even having to bid! After a month on the platform, I was easily making a few hundred dollars a week.
I’ve found that it’s easiest to win work during the school year, especially towards the second half of each semester. Also, Sundays and weekday evenings are usually when a lot of questions get posted. The best is if you establish a good student network during these busy times and then students come back to you when it’s less busy on the site.
Convenience and protection as a Studypool tutor:
Another great thing about Studypool is that you can help students from anywhere in the world, at any time. If you can’t sleep, need extra money on that vacation, etc… You just need a laptop and internet to be able to make a few extra bucks.
Lastly, Studypool does have the ethical responsibility of protecting their tutors and their students. One of the ways they protect us tutors is by making down payment transactions, meaning students pre-pay their assignments, and after it is done, they release it if it is good quality. That is why Studypool is preferred for working as an online tutor since it is equally fair to students and tutors.
Speaking from experience, this is one of the best online jobs available. You can choose your own work hours and can calculate how much you will make a month, while doing it from the comfort of your own home.
