Father’s Day History
Father’s Day was not an official holiday in the United States until 1972 but was conceptualized and promoted much earlier – in the early 20th century – by Sonora Smart Dodd from Spokane, Washington. Dodd was in the midst of a Mother’s Day sermon when she switched gears, hoping to honor her father in a stirring speech dedicated to dads everywhere. Dodd’s father was a veteran of the Civil War who was responsible for raising her and her five brothers on his own.
Is Father’s Day a Federal Holiday?
Unfortunately for those looking to spend some time with loved ones who may work a little too hard, Father’s Day is not a federal holiday. However, given that Father’s Day always falls on a Sunday, many places of business will be closed.
Most restaurants and many convenience stores will be open for business. If you’d like to take dad out for a nice meal or treat, the doors are likely open.
What Shops, Businesses, and Services Close For Father’s Day?
Almost all commercial businesses remain open for Father’s Day – at least those retailers and services which normally do business on a Sunday. While banks and many federal and state offices won’t be open, eateries and shopping malls should be more than accommodating.
As always, call in advance if you plan to travel to locations where the hours may be in doubt. Better safe than delayed (and perturbed)!
A Few Great Gift Ideas For Father’s Day 2019
While some old classic gifts like a silk tie, dress shirt, or steak dinner may be appealing to more than a few fathers, it’s also important to think about some novel gift ideas for dad once in a while.
A good book is a great treat, and if you know his favorite genre – even better. Technology or tools are also a go-to favorite, whether your pops prefers the latest iPhone or the heaviest Snap-On gear.
Subscription boxes are still running full-steam ahead as well, with Craft Beer Box offering up suds to the thirsty fathers out there and Loot Crate serving up some nerdy options for all of the geeky comic book dads out there. Meanwhile, Carnivore Club and Jerkygent offer savory flavored meats to the patriarch of the family.
No matter what you choose to give your dad this Father’s Day, the most important thing is to spend some time with them. If you don’t live near him, place a phone call or a Skype call. If you’re lucky enough to live close by, make sure to stop in. Father’s Day comes but once a year, so make the most of it.
