Labor Day is an annual federal holiday that recognizes all of the contributions of the American workforce. As a reward for helping the economy and the country thrive, many people have Labor Day off from work.
Certain Businesses and Government Agencies Close
While getting a day off is beneficial to many, it does means certain businesses and government agencies close. Some won’t have any staff members on-duty during the holiday, while others only maintain minimal manning, so they don’t have the resources to handle customers.
Since Labor Day, which falls on September 3 in 2018, is on a Monday, it can be confusing when it comes to figuring out which places are open or closed. If you plan on handling errands or doing some shopping, it helps to know what will and won’t be open. That way, you don’t incidentally waste time heading over to a location that closes for the holiday.
Here is a look at what is and is not open on Labor Day.
The vast majority of chain retail stores are open on Labor Day. The only exception tends to be Costco, which chooses to close for the holiday.
Many large retailers, including Walmart, Target, and Home Depot, often have massive sales to celebrate the holiday. This means you may find a number of bargains, especially on summer-oriented items that are going out of season or back-to-school goods.
Some small retail stores that are not part of a chain may close in recognition of Labor Day. Small business owners control their own schedules, so make sure to check in advance if you want to head to a “mom and pop” store on the holiday.
Most major grocery store chains are open on Labor Day. However, some locations may close early, using holiday operating hours. Usually, reduced hours mean early closures. If you plan to grocery shop in the evening or later, you may want to contact the store to see if they will close early for the holiday.
In some cases, grocery stores also have special Labor Day sales. Typically, this means food items that coordinate with the holiday are available at a discount.
Drug Stores and Pharmacies
Major chain drugstores, such as CVS, Rite Aid, and Walgreens, are generally open on Labor Day. However, they may be using holiday hours, including at the pharmacy counter. If you need to pick up a prescription or other goods and plan to go in the evening, you may want to call ahead to make sure they are open.
Independent or local pharmacies may not open on Labor Day. Each location determines their own schedule, so check in advance if you were hoping to pick up a prescription or other items on September 3, 2018.
Since there is a large amount of holiday traffic on the roads, chain gas stations are usually open on Labor Day. The convenience stores associated with a gas station are also typically open, though may have reduced hours.
One exception is the Costco gas station. Costco employees get Labor Day off, so there will not be a customer service worker present. Additionally, independent gas stations may choose not to open their convenience stores on the holiday. However, you can use a debit or credit card to pay at the pump at the vast majority of gas stations, you can still fill up your gas tank even if the store portion is not open.
The majority of chain restaurants are open on September 3, even though Labor Day is a holiday. However, some locations may operate on holiday hours.
Independent restaurants set their own holiday schedules, so some may decide to close for Labor Day. If you intend to go to a restaurant on September 3, call in advance to verify the locations hours before you make the trip.
Banks and Credit Unions
Financial institutions usually close on federal holidays, and Labor Day is no exception. This means tellers are not available to assist with or handle any transactions, and phone-based customer service is also typically not available.
However, ATMs are usually accessible, allowing you to complete certain transactions even if the branch closes. Additionally, online account access is also available, though specific transactions, like mobile check deposits or bank-to-bank transfers, might not go through until the next business day.
US Stock Exchanges and Bond Markets
However, international stock markets, like the London and Tokyo Exchanges, are open on Labor Day. Since foreign countries do not recognize Labor Day in the US as a holiday for them, they do not shut down in recognition of the event.
Federal, State, and Local Government Offices
The vast majority of government offices close on all federal holidays and will not open on Labor Day. Some locations maintain minimal staff for essential functions, such as issues of public safety, though may not be open to customers during the holiday.
Police and fire stations will have staff on-duty during Labor Day, as this ensures the safety of each community. Additionally, National Parks are also open, so you can head to one during the holiday.
Garbage Pickup and Local Dumps
Many garbage services close on Labor Day. This means garbage pickup may shift to another day of the week and you may not be able to bring items to the dump.
However, this varies by location. Some garbage services, particularly those not operated by the city or county, may maintain their typical schedule. If you usually have your garbage picked up on Mondays, you may want to call your service provider and confirm whether your pickup day is changing due to the holiday.
Post offices are government agencies and will close on Labor Day. This means you cannot go to the post office and receive assistance for staff and mail pickup and delivery do not occur.
However, if you have a post office box in an unsecured part of the building, you can still check your mail, though nothing new will be put in the boxes on the holiday. Additionally, self-service kiosks may also be available.
If school is already back in session before the holiday in your city, both private and public schools usually close in recognition of Labor Day.
Boarding schools and colleges with dorms that begin the year before Labor Day may have basic services available for students who live on-site, but class is usually not in session on the holiday.
