Mother’s Day spending is expected to reach $23.6 billion this year, including gifts and restaurant outings.
About 86% of consumers will observe the holiday in one form or another, up a full percentage point over last year, according to the National Retail Federation’s survey on 2018 Mother’s Day spending, conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics.
The average shopper will spend $180 for the holiday, down from last year’s $186.39, but still the second highest in the 15 years that the annual survey has been conducted.
Mother’s Day Spending
People between the ages of 35 and 44 will spend the most this year, an average of $224. Those likeliest to use smartphones for their shopping research are people from age 18 to 24 — almost two thirds of them will going this route.
As for where people will buy gifts, 35 percent will go to department stores, 31 percent will shop online, and 29 percent will shop at florists, jewelers, electronics stores or other specialty retailers. Another 23 percent will shop at local small businesses, 22 percent will go to discount stores and 10 percent will hit specialty clothing stores.
