So, what is the Costco chicken plant plan and what may the affects be?
What is the Costco Chicken Plant Plan?
Costco eagerly asked for a bump in funding at the end of 2016 for its chicken plant plan. The Costco chicken plant, which was originally slated the cost of the project to be $180 million, has bumped its funding up to $275 million.
Essentially the Costco chicken plant will be a Costco-owned chicken processing location. Last spring Costco said that it was beginning to build a network of chicken producers in eastern Nebraska, which it has already achieved.
Lincoln Premium Poultry is the company that is currently working with Costco to open the Fremont location. Costco hopes to use Lincoln to establish a network of farmers to provide poultry to the plant, which is giving work to a large amount of farmers. In fact, the entire project predicts to open up up to 1,000 jobs in the area.
Where Will the Costco Chicken Plant Be Located?
Not everyone in the area is excited about the jobs the Costco chicken plant will produce though. According to a local Nebraska news source, since Costco chose Fremont, Nebraska as the location for the plant it has been the center of controversy.
Concerns rise over the location of the Costco chicken plant
Those who oppose the Costco chicken plant say the project would bring pollution, noise, disease, problems for farmers and unwanted immigrant workers. However, Fremont government officials are excited about the size of the plant (360,000 square feet) and what it may mean for the area’s economy.
How Will the Costco Chicken Plant Affect Shoppers?
Outside of the environmental concerns, however, some Costco customers are wondering how this will affect the Costco shopping experience. Essentially it will have no direct affect on the “Costco experience.” Actually, it may wind up saving Costco members even more money.
Costco is basically cutting out the middle man with the Costco chicken plant project by processing its own chicken for stores. This should make Costco-branded chicken items in the stores cheaper than before, which is good news for Costco chicken lovers. Either way, Costco is aiming to make big moves in 2017 and aims to grow substantially this year.
