Many of us remember realizing that 9/11 was no accident when the second plane struck. But we tend to forget the harrowing stories of first responders who sought to rescue victims of the most chilling disaster of our time. All 50 states participate in some act of service and remembrance. They may participate in food drives, improve local schools or find ways to directly honor veterans and military families.
As we think of Patriot Day, it’s important to remember the heroes that saved so many lives: the first responders. Consider events like thee, designed to honor them:
Climb the Stairs
Several emergency response organizations and fire departments are climbing the stairs of local towers to symbolically honor those first responders who climbed the stairs to save as many lives as they could on 9/11.
Tribute Ceremony
Ceremonies are being held in public places including local first responders to help commemorate the sacrifice of those who lost their lives on 9/11.
Lunch for First Responders and the Homeless
Some locations have decided making lunch for area first responders is a great way to celebrate. And with the leftover food, they’ll help the local homeless population enjoy a good meal.
Murals Dedicated to First Responders
In Nanticoke, PA, a local artist is painting a mural on the side of the firehouse to honor first responders and the sacrifices they made on 9/11.
Adopt-A-Station
Some towns have decided to give back to first responders with small tokens of thanks, such as flowers, home cooked meals, snacks and letters of thanks dedicated to the local firefighters.
We will never forget the sacrifices of those who responded to the terrorist attacks of 9/11. Show them you much their sacrifice means by participating in an event like one of these on Patriot Day.
