Are Grocery, Drug and Liquor Stores Open for Labor Day 2014?

Many people consider Labor Day weekend as the unofficial end of summer, and the holiday gives friends and family a last chance to enjoy doing outdoor activities such as barbecuing before the weather turns colder. If you’re planning to have a gathering of family and friends, as well as providing food and drinks for them, then it’s important to plan ahead and know the schedules of grocery, drug and liquor stores in your area. In 2014, Labor Day is federally recognized on Monday, September 1. Luckily, most stores will be open over the holiday weekend and on the following Monday.

Grocery Stores

Grocery stores are open on Labor Day

For Labor Day, all major grocery stores will be open. It’s important to note some stores may be operating according to their normal Sunday hours, or special holiday hours, for the day. Grocery store hours are largely dependent on the region where they’re located. It’s therefore a good idea to contact your local grocery store, and confirm whether or not they will be open. For the holiday weekend, all grocery stores will most likely the operating according to their normal business hours on both Saturday and Sunday.

Independently owned grocery stores, local stores and ethnic grocery stores will most likely be open over the holiday weekend if they normally operate on Saturday and Sunday. It is still best to contact them and find out whether or not they will be open on Monday, September 1. Here is a list of major grocery stores, which will be open:

  • Albertsons stores are open
  • Aldi stores are open
  • Bi-Lo stores are open
  • Giant Eagle stores are open
  • Kroger stores are open
  • Publix stores are open
  • Safeway stores are open
  • Trader Joe’s stores are open
  • Wegmans stores are open
  • Whole Foods stores are open

Most grocery stores began their weekly advertising cycle on Wednesday, so most holiday sales deals will begin August 27. The main Labor Day grocery sales deals usually include barbecue supplies, meats, and picnic dinner sides. With the beginning of football season, there are often discounts on foods for watching the games as well. Keeping an eye out for these grocery store sales is a great way to save some money and get a good deal for your holiday celebrations. Some stores may even have special holiday weekend promotions, or three-day sales, which last throughout Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Be sure to watch for last-minute deals, which could give you even more great savings on your holiday weekend groceries.

Drug Stores

Drug stores are open on Labor Day

For Labor Day, all national drugstore chains are going to be open. If they’re usually open on weekends, independently owned or local drugstores will most likely be open over the holiday weekend as well. Independently owned and local drugstores should also be open on Labor Day, however, this may vary from pharmacy to pharmacy, and the best way to make sure is by contacting them. Here are some of the major drugstores which will be open on September 1:

  • CVS Caremark is open
  • Good Neighbor is open
  • Rite-Aid is open
  • Walgreens is open

Drugstores usually begin their weekly advertising schedules on Saturday, which means that you can find some good Labor Day discounts and sales from August 24 to August 31. Drugstores may also have special holiday weekend promotions, or three-day sales, from Saturday, August 30, to Monday September 1. If you are still getting ready for the school year with school supplies, these sales are great way to stock up for the year, or to get get basics for next year as well.

Liquor Stores

Liquor stores may be open on Labor Day

Whether or not liquor stores in your area will be open on Labor Day depends on the state in which you live. Depending on the state, there may be laws prohibiting liquor stores from operating during federal holidays. Chances are, if they are allowed to be open, then they will be. However, if there is any doubt, then it is a good idea to contact them to double check.
