California Declares Drought Emergency: Easy Ways to Save Water

California, experiencing its third consecutive year of dryer than usual weather, has reached the point of emergency drought conditions. Governor Jerry Brown has declared an emergency because of the continuing dry weather, and he’s asking residents to voluntarily cut their water consumption by at least 20%. While the current reductions are voluntary, he indicated that reductions could become mandatory if the current conditions don’t improve.

No matter where you live, there are a number of simple ways that you can save water by reducing the amount of water you use.

Easy Ways to Reduce Water Use

1. Check for leaky faucets both indoors and outdoors. Indoor leaks are usually found right away, but outdoor leaks may run for months before being seen. Take a walk around the yard once a week looking for any leaks at faucets, hoses and pipes. Any leaks that are found should be repaired immediately. A leaky faucet can waste as much as 2,700 gallons of water in a year.

2. When brushing teeth, be sure to turn off the faucet while brushing. Leaving the faucet running wastes approximately four gallons of water each minute. That can be as much as 200 gallons of water wasted each week for each minute a family of four keeps the water running while brushing their teeth.

3. As with brushing teeth, don’t keep the faucet running when washing hands, especially when lathering up the soap.

4. Set a timer when taking a shower. The shorter amount of time you spend in the shower, the less water that will be wasted. To remind yourself to get out in a timely manner, set a timer for 10 minutes.

5. For any hoses that you use outside, fit them with a spray nozzle. This will allow you to use them without wasting water during the times when you don’t need the water running.

6. For all the faucets and shower heads in your house, buy aerators to reduce the water flow, This should still allow for a strong stream of water to come out while using much less water.

7. Compost instead of using your water disposal. By using your garbage disposal only when absolutely necessary, you can save gallons of water by not throwing as much down the drain as you usually have in the past.

8. Use one designated glass for all your drinks throughout the day. By only using a single glass rather than several each day, you will reduce the number of times that you need to run your dishwasher.

9. If you only like to drink cold water, fill up 2-liter bottles or a pitcher and place it into your refrigerator. This will let you drink cold water without running the faucet and waiting for it to get cold each time.

10. Avoid thawing food with running water. If you can, plan ahead and take it out of the freezer with enough time so that the food can thaw in the refrigerator or on the counter top. For those instances when it needs to be quickly thawed, use the microwave instead of running water.

    I collect run offs in a container which I use for soaking dishes.

    We have a well pump in our backyard, so we don’t depend on the city water. It only costs us a little of electricity to get the water, probably around $10 a month. We use a ton of water in the summer time for our garden and trees. I don’t bother to water the grass, then we won’t have to use a mower and the gas for it.
