Certificate of Deposit

A certificate of deposit (CD) is a deposit made, usually to a bank or credit union, for a specified amount of time for a specified interest rate. The time of the deposit can vary between one and 120 months with longer periods usually receiving higher interest rates. If the money is withdrawn before the maturation of the CD, there is usually a penalty.
