Money Saving Tip
When traveling abroad, wait until you reach your destination before converting your money into foreign currency (unless arriving at a time when exchange windows will be closed). You almost always get a better exchange rate once you reach your destination that before you leave.

Money Fun Fact
During the Civil War period, people hoarded coins because of their intrinsic value. This created a drastic shortage of coins for circulation so "fractional currency" was produced in 1862. The lowest denomination in this series was three cents. Fractional notes were discontinued in 1876

ING Direct

ING is an online banking service that offers higher than average interest rates. Currently ING offers an interest rate of 4.15% on its saving s account. You must deposit a minimum of $1.00 to open the account and there are no fees involved with the account. Although it isn't the highest interest rate offered by an online bank, ING does have one of the easiest sign-up pages (it takes about 10 minutes to sign up) and a friendly website design.

If you sign-up for an ING savings account through a friend, you will get a $25 bonus to your account simply for signing up with a minimum $250 initial deposit (once the deposit is made, there are no minimum requirements or fees - this bonus is not available if you sign up directly from the ING website). For a long discussion about ING and other online banks, you can read this thread. If you'd like a $25 sign-up bonus, you can access the special links here
