I just went on usps.com to check and used my zip code and one in california and one in kentucky. first one is far from me (illinois) but second one is next door practically. so charging a dollar more or so for shipping costs is not out of range. boxes, packing material etc do cost money. for someone doing it once not so much but what if you were selling hundreds? You have to recoup costs somewhere. Note that I did not mention the fees. Technically you are supposed to make those from the sale price. (yeah right!) Interestingly enough to ship up to two pounds is only 2.77 for media mail. so depending on how many shipping would depend on cost for shipping. It didn't list first class cost but media is usually cheapest. it did list parcel post and for one pound it was 4.90 just to go to kentucky which is close to me.

I check Ebay and see how much they go for there. You'd be surprised. Depends how much time and effort you want to put into it. I sold a bunch of old Disney movies on DVD and they went for $10- $22 each depending on what edition they were. I also sold some old classic films for $5- $11 each. Anything that might be obscure, older, harder to locate or out of print try Ebay. Also, boxed sets of tv series are good for Ebay.
New & easy to find movies you might be best off going to a local store that sells used dvds. I prefer Bullmoose because they give the best prices. They also have a good selection so whenever I want to purchase a dvd, I try to buy it there from their used stock.

Also, found out recently that video games cannot go media mail. I sent some that way and they opened them and charged my buyer an additional 5.00. Fortunately they contacted me and I paypaled them the money. so I sold 4 games and it cost approx 7.00 to ship them. buyer wasn't far away either. I believe that you can still ship dvd's by media mail though.

Are you sure about that, cicy33? I sent a video game in the mail a few months ago and asked the post office guy if I can send media mail, and he said yes. Hopefully the buyer didn't take you for a ride...

From what I understand, any and all media mail is subject to search so I'd never send anything media mail anyway. Not worth saving the extra few cents to inconvenience my buyers.
The general rule is that anything on "media" (ie. discs, dvds, cds or floppies) can go media mail. Anything that is on cartridge (old atari, nintendo etc. games) can not because they are considered hardware. I shipped 5 cds last week. Each cd sold for between $8.99 & $17.99. All went first class and all cost $1.70 or so. I charged my buyers $1.50. A guy in California told me he got it 2 days later (I'm in northern MA). I have to ship this weeks batch of stuff tomorrow so I can check on this at the PO and report back if anyone wants.

I took a small box of cds and dvds to Bullmoose tonight. I got $41.
There were 36 total items...many were very common pop music cds (a lot of Rush) and previously used (as in I bought them used myself when I bought them) in good shape with cases in acceptable shape. The dvds were less than impressive. This stuff had been sitting in a box in my basement gathering dust. Last weeks batch was 32 items and I got $71. Less items but they were more obscure and the cd cases were in better shape. I have about 350 cds and 40 dvds left to sort and sell. I have all my music stored on my computer and backed up on an external drive so I have no use for the cds. I rarely watch these dvds. So really, it's just easy fast cash.

Bullmoose is a cd/record/dvd/game store. Newbury Comics is another one. They are chains but it's possible that they are regional and not countrywide.
FYE is a nationwide chain that buys used dvds. They tend to be in malls or located near strip malls. I tend to use Bullmoose because they give better prices than Newbury Comics and I can only assume FYE doesn't give as much either. Could be wrong though. There are used cd/dvd shops all over the place but sometimes they are easy to miss if you aren't really into music or movies. There is a place in my own town that I never even knew about until this weekend. Many of these stores are not huge so they're easy to walk by and not notice. However there are also a ton of smaller places I noticed last month located in Boston & Cambridge that buy and sell as well as some places in smaller towns. I discovered this weekend there is actually a place in the center of my own town that buys dvds and cds. I plan to check them out this week. I'm looking into a place that takes vinyl because I have 4 crates full of vinyl I think might be worth something too.

I would try to sell the lot on Craigslist. Try to find someone local who is willing to pay a little more for the lot.

another update on postage. I have been selling more frequently on half.com they are reimbursing postage for one video or game $3.00. It is costing me $2.76 - $2.96 to ship these items. This is actual cost, no extra for packaging or gas to take them there. All costs associated with shipping in any business. so the days of a buck for shipping are long gone. Remember, folks, postage has increased. If you are just shipping one here and there you will not notice the need to pay for supplies, but when you are shipping several a week or more you will notice it! I did discover one find tho. I picked up a box of folders at a yard sale really cheap and these provide very nice packaging. a little tougher to withstand mail but not so heavy as to shove it into the next weight level. As said before it is much cheaper to ship more than one than just one. It actually costs approx the same to ship two as one.

I used a site called secondspin
It was really simple to use. Type in the UPC and off you go. I got over $50 for all my DVD's. They sent payment to my paypal account.

We take our old dvd's and cd's that we don't use anymore to hastings, you can either get cash or store credit (you get more if you take store credit). they will also take books.
