From the podcast Stuff You Should Know, apparently there's a lot less plasma than people who donate, so it's actually a good karma thing as well. It supposedly does take longer, but it might be worth it.

The altruistic ones donate blood - they no longer pay for it, I got my 5 gallon pin before some strange hep antibodies showed up in my blood and they asked me to stop. (I did donate blood back in the 60s when they still paid for it). The plasma business is sort of where the old blood stuff was. You will notice that the the plasma centers are located in the poorest neighborhoods and, oddly enough, though - all the different people who run the plasma centers pay the same rates (which have gone down lately since the economy has hit the tubes and everyone is looking for an extra hundred a week) - of course, factors they get from the plasma well, the cost of that is skyrocketing.

They use to call the blood banks vampires because er, they hung around skid row and drained the blood of the least of us. The feds are looking for collusion or cartels - anyway, there have been some investigations.

I might give this a shot! Could be another drop in the bucket as I'm trying to become debt free

Made my first plasma donation yesterday. Wasn't too bad although it ate up my entire afternoon because it was my first time.

It was an interesting crowd and actually was one of those moments that puts things into perspective relative to the life I've been fortunate enough to live.

At any rate - I was paid $30 in cash. I plan on going tomorrow and I believe they give out $45 for your second donation in a week. I can sit there for the hour or hour and a half and get some reading out of the way. So it's not lost time.

It's not ideal, but I'm on a mission to become debt free and this sure does help!

I had seen commercials for a place that you can get paid for your donations but it is located in the hood and I am not going to the hood plus who's going to watch my kids?

Yellow pages "plasma" or google plasma +(your city) and choose an address that suits your fancy - in the upscale neighborhoods they might even offer baby sitting.
