My husband and I eat cereal every morning, and have since we married. Now that we're living on one income, it seems like cereal is pretty expensive (the healthier cereals anyway). Neither of us like oatmeal, unfortunately. What do you guys eat for breakfast? Any other healthy, cheaper alternatives?

depends on the time of year, but coffee, glass of juice, buttered toasts with jam, yogurt.
on weekends DH and i eat sausage biscuits from home a lot, or pancakes. these both freeze well (especially easy if you use glad press & seal to freeze individual portions for re-heating). |

rice with a little butter, brown sugar and raisins

english muffins..though I have have no idea the cost comparison.
try dinner food for breakfast, no reason why eggs or cereal have to be for breakfast, fast dinners, sandwhiches work great. |

I eat a variety of breakfast foods...boxed cereal and fruit, homemade granola in milk, english muffins with cream cheese and veggies, toast (with peanut butter, or jelly, or butter and cinnamon, oatmeal, scrambled eggs, fried eggs, scratch pancakes, or french toast (I always make extra pancakes and french toast and just put the leftovers in the toaster to reheat). Sometimes I will make a banana bread or pumpkin bread or muffins to have for breakfast. I have coffee every morning and sometimes juice or milk.
I've never really figured it out, but I think the scratch pancakes are the least expensive item on the list. |

My favorite is the old fashioned slow cooking irish oatmeal that has a nutty taste to it, and I buy it from Trader Joe's. I'll slow boil a cup of oatmeal with 4 cups of water. Devide it into 4 containers and store it in the refrigerator. To eat it I'll take one container out, add 1/2 chopped apple, 1/2 cup skim milk and some cinnamon, than warm it up in the microwave. Fast and easy. The best!

Small variety here.
Usually a chunk of cheese about an ounce w/some yogurt and a glass of calcium fortified OJ. I consider this my calcium wash that I flood my system w/each morning. Along with -- get ready to shudder -- a tablespoon of cod liver oil (the flavored kind) with all of these breakfasts. Sometimes Aldi's Loven 12 grain wheat toast w/real butter and honey. Sometimes that Ezekiel 4:9 cereal w/some frozen blueberries tossed on top. Yes, I sweeten cereal & coffee w/1 tsp. of real sugar. I'm done w/the pink packets. Ocassionally a bowl of oatmeal. Sometimes a small bag of almonds and a cup of yogurt. or one of those yogurt drinks and a banana. All of these breakfasts come w/the cod liver oil, vitamins B, C, D, E, an aspirin and a good one a day vitamin. I also drink one to two cups of coffee each morning. Ocassionally I'll drink green tea instead. Nightfall comes w/B-12, folic acid and calcium tab. As I age I tend to think more of the health benefits of my meals rather than costs. I am worth it! (but if it were too expensive I'd be trying to think of healthful but less expensive options - I am a fruggie after all - but low health care costs because of keeping things fit is a savings as well.) I am rarely if ever sick. Can't tell you the last time I was sick. It's been YEARS. Thank You Jesus! |

Oh wow, I love breakfast and eat just about anything. I guess oatmeal is about the most inexpensive thing I eat. Organic cereals. Whole grain breads. Eggs. I bet a breakfast burrito would be good. I love the idea of rice and something. I have hot tea with my breakfasts. Guess that doesn't help you out much since you were looking for alternatives to oatmeal and cereal. I'd like to see the ideas, also.

Most of the time, I just drink coffee for breakfast. For some reason, I am just not hungry in the morning. But, when I do eat, I go for oatmeal or grits. I also like boxed cereal or an occassional English muffin. I premake scrambled eggs and pancakes. I cook a box of pancakes at a time and freeze. Easy to pop one in the microwave for the kids.
