Default Make Your Own: Homemade Taco Seasoning Mix

It's WAY cheaper to make your own taco seasoning than to buy those little packets. Here's a recipe I love to make your own. It's a better quality than those packets too, since there are no wonky preservatives or chemicals to add a funny taste.

Christina

Homemade Taco Seasoning Mix

· 6 tsp chili pwdr

· 5 tsp paprika

· 4 1/2 tsp ground cumin

· 3 tsp onion pwdr

· 2 1/2 tsp garlic pwdr

· 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper

· 1/4 tsp salt

stir together and store in air tight cont. I then use 2 - 3 tbsp of it in place of the store bought mix.

That sounds good!!! How much water do you add to it? I assume for a pound of meat?

Thanks!

hmm I really want to try this, but DH says it isn't cheaper... I am not sure I care, cause I am anti preservatives....but are there preservatives in the spices?

No, there would be a lot less spices. It tastes better too.

Yes, it's for 1 lb of ground beef -- and I think it's 3/4 cup of water that you add, and let it all simmer down together until it creates that thicker sauce. Yummericious!

Hugs,
Christina

PS. And I sort of disagree w/your boyfriend - it IS cheaper than the name brand mixes. You can buy the spices in bulk and it's quite cheap when you're only using a few tablespoons at a time. That's just MY opinion of course. hehe

Thanks! I've been looking for a good taco seasoning recipe too. Here's a VERY rough estimate - if you buy each of the 7 spices above for $.50 (the price I usually pay for a small jar, although you can probably get a better price in bulk), that's $3.50, or about 4 packages of taco seasoning. The recipe above would probably yield a similar amount to four packages of seasoning mix, but you would use only a fraction of the container of spices (maybe 1/4 jar, at most) and have all the rest leftover. You could probably make 4-6 times the amount for the same price.
Of course, that's assuming you buy generic and not McCormick, which I find terribly expensive. I don't have very discriminating tastes - someone more gourmet might find the higher priced spices worth the price.

I forgot to add - the part I like best is the convenience of having all the spices on hand to make this. I hate it when I want taco seasoning and don't have a packet on hand. This recipe will eliminate that. Thanks!
