Poorman's Hamburger??
When I was working a gal used to stretch her hamburger w/ bread crumbs & ???? She made one for another co-worker who raved about it.
Anyone know how to make something along the lines of this?

I guess it is the same principle as making a meat lof except you are frying it up.

Re: Poorman's Hamburger??
I put cooked rice and onions in my meatloaf. I have tried bread crumbs but it did not add anything to the taste!

Re: Poorman's Hamburger??
I think the finner crumbs works, but I have to use my grinder thing from the hand mixer to get them that fine, I also up the seasonings.
I have used mushrooms too, but that is more for flavor than filler (depending on season the mushrooms cost as much as the meat!)

Re: Poorman's Hamburger??
I've used both TVP and bread crumbs to stretch meat. Also, some homemade shake'n'bake I wasn't using got thrown in with meat. But I don't cook meat that much so usually don't extend it.

Re: Poorman's Hamburger??
all of the above comments are good... just wanted to tell everyone about a burger we made..
take 2 flattned out burgers ( i use a plastic baggie and flatten them with my hand)
take 1 of the flattned burgers, add on the top of it, thinly slice of onion, pepper, tomato.
take the left over flattned burger and carefully place on top..of ingredients... use your fingers and pinch the outside closed...
fry or bake on a low heat... discard the fat, 3 times, and return to heat.... when almost done. apply a slice of velvetta cheese on top...... these can be barbecued in foil too....

Re: Poorman's Hamburger??
I've used the TVP to stretch meat too, but once my family sees it, they complain (even though they can't tell the difference in taste!). I haven't done this in a long time...maybe it's time to sneak it back in
I've used it in chili and the like where there is a lot of other things to add flavor (other than the meat). I have heard it's good to use in tacos, sloppy joes, etc. too.
(texturized vegetable protein, for anyone who's wondering - it comes dried and you add water to it, then use like meat. I think a half meat/half TVP combo works well)

Re: Poorman's Hamburger??
Oatmeal works well, and quaker oats has many recipes for how to do it. Don't use old fashioned, though...it doesn't "dissolve in".

Re: Poorman's Hamburger??
I know this is a real question with valid answers but I couldn't help thinking about the movie "Vacation" when I read the posts.
Clark (Chevy Chase) and family stop by their cousins' on their trek to the infamous Wally World. Eddie (Randy Quaid) is preparing 'hamburgers' on the grill.
Eddie: How do you like yours, Clark?
Clark: Oh, medium rare, a little pink inside.
Eddie: No, I mean your bun.
Eddie: I don't know why they call this stuff hamburger helper. It does just fine by itself, huh? I like it better than tuna helper myself, don't you, Clark?
Clark: You're the gourmet around here, Eddie.
LOL
(I guess you had to see it.)

Re: Poorman's Hamburger??
When I was a the house cook we didn't have bread crumbs around once so I used rice krispies. It workers great in meatloaf so I don't see why it would be any different for burgers. From them on I always used it, we always seemed to have it around.

Re: Poorman's Hamburger??
Yes something similiar "Ghetto Burrito" basically you take Ramen Noodles crunch them up completely, put it in a sandwich baggy, fold it over once add enough water to fill it to the amount of noodles, add the seasonings and then put it in the microwave and then Eat!
