We usually don't keep too much money in the house, but I do know someone who keeps $500.00 hidden in her bathroom cupboard in a tampon box!

Now coins we have, coins from France, Italy, Japan, and old american. Lots of them, Oddly as far in debt as we are, we never either of us even considered cashing any of them in.

Some are from my mothers trip overseas, some from his grandfather and fathers trips/army days. Some are so old they are cool looking to me, some are actually recent coins, did you know you can no longer turn pennies green (not enough copper) but you can turn 'silver' coins brown? I think they are cool, but I worry they are not spendable anymore!

Some are weird commemorative things that I never liked actually, those we did consider getting rid of, but not sure how.

Coins of gold or silver. Wow, I didn't think you could find those anywhere or if you could, you'd be paying a hefty price for them.
$20 is about the average I keep on myself. Luckily I don't live in the states where a hurricane or tidal wave or a earthquake can chnage my life over..

Cool Re: Do you keep a stash of cash?

I am a Cosmetologist and I save all my tips for a rainy day. I also save all my change from through out the day. Some tips to hide your stash, a large vitamin bottle (can hide in plain site and no one the wiser), I have a outlet safe, can buy on ebay. Taped or hidden in a jar behind the furnace, or inside a heater vent, if possible, shove back where not visible when lifting the vent cover.

Yes I have used and still use most of these ideas, and they have come in handy, to hide from nosey kids, and spouse who cannot help themselves from spending.

I usually have anywhere from $200 - $1500 laying around.

Interesting thread, I am getting lots of good ideas! The only cash we currently keep on hand is our cash for day-to-day spending which we keep in envelopes too. My dh keeps his in a separate place from mine. I once had a small stash of money hidden in the house but some small emergency came up and there it went. I managed to keep it quite a while though. Now I think I need to start building it up again. What we have in envelopes gets pretty low before payday.

I understand about the stealing car worry, but I drive a 1984 volvo wagon with about 286 thousand miles on it, bad paint, would only be useful as a getaway car if they didn't drive above 45. Only use about 75 bucks every two weeks, and fill up with 30 bucks each payday. so there goes 45.

My dh - oh man, he's like crazy or something!!! he wants me to keep receipts so he knows where I spend my money. but I know I'm really the saver between us!!! He's a funny nut. But yeah, I think shoving a bill or two in books that you really like seems to be the best idea for me. I don't think thieves are thinking about reading a book when they are looking for cash..

- that's a very good anti-theft system you have there! If you have any hubcaps, go ahead and pop those off. An instant anti-theft system upgrade!

I totally get your point. I wouldn't worry either!

How cool would it be to have a safe behind some fake books in a bookshelf that slides open? Man, would that be cool.

You know it's bad when the hubcups pop off and spin by the car while you're driving!! Just waiting for spring and an inheirtance from my grandparent's estate....but trying to find a second job to supplement. Anyone else ever do that....i.e. days and midnights on same days??

Regarding the money in the books, I have only one thing to say.....AUUUURRRRGGGH!
Speaking as a child of a mom that did that, imagine you forgetting which book has your money in it. Now think of the time it would take to search through all your books if you have to pack up in an emergency.

I used the tampon box to store money in at work. This was before my nice tip box. I never had $500 in it. It takes a special type of person to store money in a tampon box and a rarer type of person to search a tampon box.

Well yes, when I was a teen, kept me out of the car for sleeping, but I wouldn't recomend it.

I saw a fake hair spray can in a store once. I thought it was a fab idea to hide some currency.

My worry on the decoys (tampon boxes, shaving cream cans, books, etc.) is how easily they can be thrown out or lost. I think there's a better chance of that happening than a thief breaking in and finding your money in, say, a sock drawer.

I think that if you are putting money into these decoys, as long as you either let the spouse in on the fact that you have money in there, I'm sure it won't get tossed out. As far the tampox box goes, my husband doesn't touch tampon boxes, I can't even get him to go and buy me tampons at the grocery store (he doens't think it is "manly")
