We used to live in an apartment that cost us about $325 a month, but it was a very small one bedroom apartment, surrounded by not the greatest neighbors. When we tried moving to a better neighborhood, the rents automatically started above $500 for a one bedroom, pay your own utilities. So we bought a house cuz in our area it was cheaper than renting (especially cuz my hubby wanted a garage and we had four pets).

Because of the increase in oil prices, we're thinking of selling our house and getting back into renting, but there's just nothing out there for less than we pay for our house, even with the increase. I would love to pay $395 a month! That's why I was shocked when that was considered expensive, so I was wondering if for the area, maybe it was. It's all relative, I suppose... $500-700 would be considered cheap just two hours from us (then again, the wages there also go up considerably, here they are $7 an hour, there the minimum is usually $9 or $10 for starting positions).
