Here in Canada you can take a year if you have (or adopt) a child, and it can be the man or the woman, or any combination of both (you could both take 6 months of paid leave to be with the baby if that's what you wanted). Mind you, unemployment benefits only cover just over $400/week per person maximum, so if you are used to making a high income it would be a bit of a pinch (unless you are fortunate enough to have an employer who tops up the payments to match your normal wages! I would have loved to be in that situation).

Congratulations on this exciting new phase of your lives! You have many precious moments ahead of you to cherish (and the memories of those to try to sustain you once the little angel reaches the teenage years, lol). I have a 16 year old now - I miss those toddler times The freedom I have back is pretty nice though.
