Default Is this normal for auto ins?

Hey, so is this way out of normal?

With 0 tickets in the past 10 years for both of us, my wife and I pay about $200 a month with Allstate for full coverage on a 2003 Mazda Protege, 2005 Hyundai Tuscon, and 2008 Toyota Tundra 4WD truck. They are all paid for so we don't have to have full coverage, but I think I would want it on at least the Tundra as it only has 3000 miles on it. Live in the NW

I checked Geiko, and they were not any cheaper than allstate when you factor in the $50 every six months we get back from Allstate for safe driving...also they reduce the deductable gradually and forgive the first accident.

$2400 a year seems like a lot for a couple in their late 30s, but I dunno, maybe the full coverage or something...

Was thinking Costco might have some sort of insurance also...

That does seem very high. What is your deductible? If you increase it, your premium should go down.

We have $1,000 deductibles on our vehicles...with money in our emergency fund if needed.

Your price looks high- but I only have 2 cars on my polices.

My rates went down significantly when I found an independant agent which shopped my policies around. One year he had us with travelers, the next year he switched to hanover... and the rates kept dropping (even though we have less than perfect driving records).

We pay less than $1000 for whole year with 2 new cars (2006 honda's) and a $1000 deductable with 500k per accident coverage.

I started a thread a while back to make the point that auto insurance rates vary tremendously around the country. Posting on a discussion forum with folks from all over and asking your question is really of no value.

I live in NJ. If I moved 10 miles to PA, our auto insurance premium would double at least. If I moved 15 miles south to a more rural part of NJ, my rates would drop. To come here and ask if your rate is "normal" just isn't a question that we can answer. What you need to do is get quotes on identical coverage from 3 or 4 or 5 other companies in your area. That's the only way you'll know if what you are paying is a reasonable price.

Check your deductible levels... and increase them if you want to save.

Seems very high to me, but as Steve points out it greatly depends on where you live. Allstate is notoriously high -- I was supposedly getting their "ultra preferred rate" or whatever they call it. I switched to AAA auto insurance and saved over 50% for the same coverage that I was getting before. Didn't realize I was getting ripped off so bad.

Good advice all around.

Depends where you live. I'd check the deductibles as well.

Most people would call me pretty aggressive - & we don't drop full coverage until car drops below $5k in value. Then again, if I had 3 cars, not sure I would fully insure the third one. (Just because we wouldn't *need* the third car if something happened to it).

But yeah - our insurance rates are insane where we live. You go drive on the freeway and you'll know why. Just really aggressive drivers. Ruin it for the rest of us... Perfect driving and non-fully-insured old car costs us like $900/year. The newer/fully insured car cost us $1200/year. High deductibles. Never even a traffic ticket - in our 30s. We've shopped around many times and never changed insurers. This is as good as it gets for us.
