I drive about 500 miles a year for my contracting work, and really should be documenting this so I can take the milage deduction. (Hey, every little bit counts.)
What do I have to record? Can I just put down the date of the trip and the miles, or do I have to record the odometer readings each time? |

You don't need the odometer readings. Just record the number of miles driven and for what purpose.

DS is right, you just have to have a record in case you are audited. Keep in mind commute to the office (if you have one) does NOT count.
