Default Wow! My daughter understands!!

she asked me yesterday night whether McDonald's was open (it was 7:30 pm, but very dark!)...I told her yes, but we don't have the money right now...she asked me why and I told her about fixing the alarm on the car and having to get a cab to pick up the car from the shop...she thought about it for a moment and then said: "do you think any of the free places are open?" (meaning play places that are free, like the play place at the food court in one of the malls...we usually go there after lunch time and stay until dinner time on Saturdays...we don't buy anything, I take a bottle of water from home!!)
I'm so proud!!

That is wonderful. Kids are smart and if you take the time to explain things to them, they will usually understand. The way you approached it is so much better than saying "no" without any explanation. If you do that, they don't understand why and they feel deprived. She is very lucky to have you as a mother

that's pretty cool. All you have to do is talk with your kids. You'll both get an education that way!

My 5 yr still doesn't get the concept of money and things costing things. Mom just go to the bank machine and get some. I am sure the bank will give you some.

We are starting an allowance when he turns 6 in a few weeks.

LOL!...DD was the same (she's 4.5), but I explained to her, you actually have to HAVE money in the bank for the ATM to give you some...she was kind of puzzled, but now she knows Mom can't just take any amount she wants...

That's great that you are going to start giving your son an allowance. Starting at age 6 is perfect.

Make sure you make him save some. We make our boys save 50% (25% long-term and 25% short-term). They also tithe, which is a personal choice.
