Default School Loan "Delinquent"

DH called Sallie Mae today to find out his website login, and they said his loan is delinquent. Which makes no sense, considering we are up to date on all the payments and have never not paid. I was late paying it a couple times recently, but only by a few days. Its not like I didn't pay it at all. I could understand a late fee, etc. But they said it is $600-something delinquent and I don't understand how we could owe that much when we have made every payment. Can anyone help explain it to me?

Thanks

You should be asking them! And quickly. Can't they garnish your wages to get you current?

Well it would only be delinquent by a couple months so I don't think they would jump to that so fast! Plus we are paying it this month and DH will be asking them tomorrow, I just don't know what they could say to explain it.

Depends on a whole bunch of factors....

1) Do you make online payments or write and send in a check? (mail can be delayed or lost entirely). Do you balance your checkbook and verify receipt?

2) SallieMae generally send out a booklet with receipts every six months. Sometimes (depending on interest rates), the billing becomes larger and if you're paying automatically you may not notice this. Though frankly $600 sounds a bit high.... sounds like a missed payment or that they made a mistake in allocation (maybe someone elses loan got credited)?

I'd check with the history of payments made on their website... see if you can spot a missed payment. Also go through your checkbook or bank receipts. Something should jump out at you immediately.

You bank may also be able to help trace down a "missing" check that they might claim not to have received if it did indeed clear your bank. That missing check can prove that Sallie Mae made the mistake and not you.

I may be misunderstanding the terms, but "delinquent" is usually saved for those who are at least six months behind on payments, right?

Yes I think you are right. DH called them and it is not delinquent but late since November's was not paid on time due to election day holding it up. So they had added this month and next month together as the balance due and that is why it looked like we owed so much. Thank you everyone!
