Hello. I was wondering if anyone here can help me concerning cash withdrawal from debit cards? My wife was picked up last night by the police. It turns out she got pulled over for a traffic violation, and they ran her license, and found that she had several unpaid tickets, which turned into arrest warrants. Long story short, she can't get bailed because the warrants are so old, and now she needs $1300 cash to get out!
I can cover it, but the courts will only accept cash here. My debit has a atm limit of only $300 bucks a day! I don't have a bank card, I have a pre paid debit that I got online. Is there any way for me to get my cash off here, and get my wife out of jail? If her job finds out she's in the slammer tomorrow, they will fire her for sure! What can I do? |

Pay Day Loans are terrible, but they might be something to consider in this situation if you do have the money, but just can't get access to it quickly. Then pay it back as soon as possible.

I think most debit cards have a pre-set daily limit, so for example, you may only be able to normally withdraw $300 or so out at once. In order to withdraw more than that, you have to let your bank know in advance.
That said, that's what bail bond agencies are for. If you are desperate for cash that you don't have. Typically, you pay them 10% upfront and they'll loan you the full amount. Once the trial is over, they collect their loan back. Of course, you'll lose that 10% you've given them, but that's how they make their money. It's better if you can post the bail yourself, because you won't lose money then. |

Are you a member of AAA? I believe membership includes bail bond service though I have no idea what the details are.
Cash a check at a check-cashing place like United. You'll pay a 2 or 3% fee but it is better than 10% to the bail bonds folks or payday loan folks.

Bail is really a deposit you make to the court so they know you will return for the trial and not skip town. If bail for an offense is $1,300, you can pay it and be released. When you show up for the trial, you receive the full amount of that money back and can pocket it or apply it to court costs. That's the benefit of paying in cash.
When people don't have enough to pay for the bail, they get a bail bond by paying a bond agent 10% (typically) of the bail. The bondsman posts the entire bail amount, hoping they will get it back when you show up for court. They don't return that 10% to you, but keep it as their profit for "loaning" you that money. If you want to post immediately, call the number on the back of your debit card and see if they are able to waive the daily ATM limit. If not, post that bond and forfeit the $130. You'll probably pay more than that on finance charges for a payday loan of $1,300. If your state allows bail bonds, that's probably the thing to do. |

Hi guys. Thanks for all the responses. My wife is still locked up. She cannot receive a bond at all. Not even a bail bonds man can get her out. Her fines have to be paid in cash. She has never been to court on the charges she has, so they wont allow a bond before she has seen the Judge. I talked to a bail bondsman for help, and they said the judge is gonna want the payment today, or he will send her back to jail, until the fines are paid. However, she can be bonded on the new tickets she has if she pleads guilty today, but I still need the 1300 cash in order for her to come home....Not sure what to do. I never had to get large amounts of money off my card, but because it's a online debit card, there is no local bank for me to go to. This is the worst...

Hmm. So, you're saying, even with the bond, they won't let her out until she pays the old fines up front, right? How much are the fines? I can't imagine them being that much.... These are traffic tickets right?
Believe it or not, but $1300 isn't much as for as bonds go. Relatively speaking, that's minimal flight risk. High risks are typically ten times that, but I suppose that's hardly any consolation at this point.... |

Her new tickets = Bond ($45)
Her old tickets = NO BOND, must be paid in cash ($1300) You cannot be bonded once your tickets have turned into warrants. You have to go before the judge and plead guilt or not guilt for the tickets you never showed up for. If you plead guilty, you will need to pay the fines to get out of jail, or do your time to pay the fines... |

Oh! Ok, I see. So the $1300 is for the fine, not the bond.

But yes, in practice, they just make you pay your tickets right then and there. The hearing should hopefully come up pretty soon. Perhaps she can get it paid off then and get out shortly. Last edited by Broken Arrow : 11-03-2008 at 08:37 AM. |

I'd try borrowing from a friend or family member.
As a last resort, I suppose you could pawn something? |

Why in God's name did she not pay off the old tickets? Good luck....this is a tough situation. I have to agree with scr. Hopefully a friend or family can bail her out. The silver lining is that maybe she'll learn to be more responsible with her driving.

If you have a credit card, you should be able to take it into any bank and get a cash advance on the credit card. There will be fees/high interest rates to pay.
