If they have $250,000 in savings, then they seem to have things pretty much under control themselves. What exactly is it that they are seeking advice on?

I think it totally depends on the person. If they are self directed and confident with money matters, there is no reason to pay someone to do what you can do yourself with a small amount of research. Of course, if they aren't interested in taking the task on themselves that is what paid help is for.
