This was done to me a few years ago by Sears. They converted our store card into a mastercard. I don't recall ever getting any advanced notice about it.

One thing I'm confused about is the comment about lowing credit scores by closing an account and opening a new one. Our mastercard account shows it has been open since the original Sears card was issued, not when the new card/number was issued. I've dealt with this a couple of times when we've had numbers lost or stolen and had to replace cards, it's never shown up [on a credit report] as a different account even with a different account number? This is fresh on my mind this morning as my DH is away on business and lost his CC last night- presumably at a restaurant. I am not thrilled with him right now. Oh well, in a situation like that you have to do it anyway.
